Well, technically, but at £9 per year you're paying the equivalent of updating a standalone piece of software every 5 years or so.

And SaaS can have benefits. A piece of free audio transcription software, Transcribe, recently went SaaS at $20 per year, which seems horrendous, but I decided to go for it, as it is very useful, and in the few months since they started getting funding coming in they've added some excellent new features (including voice recognition). The pace of development has increased a lot.

I think you need to take each service on its own merits and, like any other purchase, see if it's worth it for you.

Over at Chrome Story they reckon it will work against Microsoft. There are a huge number of people who have never heard of Chromebooks, and Microsoft attacking them will simply advertise their existence.

The ad may well make more people find out about Chromebooks than would have done had Microsoft not made the attack advert.

Also, I love the way they attack Chrome and Google while the actress carefully covers the Samsung logo on the Chromebook throughout.

MS did same for netbooks when Ubuntu was to be used for OS.
MS reversed course and licensed $10 XP to manufacturers.

Chromebook will not use MS XP. Will not use MS Office. Bad for MS.

The "force" is with Chromebook.

Why 2GB of RAM? Ram is the easiest cheapest way to improve performance. Can you expand RAM DIY?

Other than the RAM, I wait to hear about the screen's performance. Everything else seems great.

Yes, the halving of the RAM is disappointing. Chrome OS is lightweight, but it never hurts to have some extra RAM.

The RAM is soldered to the motherboard, so it's not replaceable - unless you're handy with a soldering iron and have very steady hands
