Pixel QI screen puts the iPad to shame for outdoor use.
One can only hope that the Adam tablet isn't to far away so we can drool over a screen like this:

This is not really all that new. There've been outdoor screens for decades. The colors and contrast have never been as sharp as normal screens, as is evidenced by this video demonstration. It's always a 'give and take' decision on what suits the individual's needs the most.

The "outdoor screens" that have been around "for decades" are completely unlike Pixel Qi screens. Pixel Qi screens have no color or contrast differences compared to a "normal" LCD, until you take them outside. At that point, the Pixel Qi screen offers washed out colors (in the shade) or grayscale (in direct sunlight) while the "normal" LCD offers a barely visible screen (in the shade) or nothing useful at all (in direct sunlight).
I've been using one for some time on my OLPC XO and will not even consider a new portable with a "normal" LCD. |

This screen is revolutionary for two reasons. The second is probably more important than the first.
"We are embracing a practice commonly used by the Silicon integrated circuit industry. We are designing our new screens to fit into existing LCD manufacturing processes, with existing materials, already available at the screen manufacturers in extremely high volume with excellent pricing, quality, and reliability." http://www.pixelqi.com/mission Watch some of the Mary Lou Jepson comments about the screen or read about her work with the "One laptop per child" movement |

Not to mention you get close to e-ink quality when backlit is turned off.

The problem is that pixelQI is vaporware at this moment.
After a year of the first inminent device announcement, they dont have anything in the market. |

Well, I wouldn't call them vaporware... There are well over a million Pixel Qi displays in use around the world, just not in anything readily available for commercial purchase.
The delays in getting them into devices other than the OLPC are really in the hands of the manufacturers of those devices, not the supplier of the display those devices will be using. |

Mary Lou Jepson points out in the video that the One Laptop Per Child devices have a precursor to the Qi screen. A year is not a very long time in this business, especially the display part of it. Take OLED's that are starting to show up in small quantities at very high prices. The patents on OLEDs have expired. |
