Hey Patrick,
Thank you so much for your quick reply! I really appreciate it. The NE Ordbok is an excellent dictionary, and I’m glad it is included. Unfortunately, the Swedish dictionary on my current e-reader is quite poor, which makes it difficult to look up words efficiently. This is the info I needed to finally buy a Kobo. Thanks again for your help! |

Yes I now have the 2024 version of the Oxford English Dictionary. Which would be well and good except that this version seems to have removed the etymology of words from the 2019 edition, which I find very disappointing.

If you still have a copy of the dicthtml.zip file for the old version, you can copy it to the .kobo/custom-dict directory. When you look in Settings => Language and dictionaries => Dictionary and tap on edit on your Kobo, you should see an English dictionary with file size 12.4MB and and English (Custom) dictionary with a file size of 15.0MB. When you look up a word, you will see the newer dictionary but if you click on dropdown arrow beside English at the top of the popup, you can select English (Custom) for the older dictionary. You can also place the older dictionary in the dict folder but that copy will be overwritten at some point when you connect to Kobo.

Grrrr.
Having read through this thread carefully, and keeping in mind what happened to John Hopper, I decided to update my dictionary to the 2019 version, and now I don't show any etymology for the words. Stupidly, I did not back up what I had, which worked very well aside from a mildly annoying "did not find 'annoying'" followed by the actual definition of annoying - that's why I was updating. Can anyone point to the real OED that shows the etymology? The 2019 did not work for me, nor did the other 6,000 I downloaded and tried. I tried rebooting and also turning the dictionary off and back on. No joy. Ha ha ha ha ha ha. I drove the thing nuts and after completely getting locked up, I reset the damn device. All books are gone. LOL. I don't know which dictionary I have, but I'm still getting that: "Your search for "wherever" did not match any words in the dictionary. The closest match was "wherever"." And of course, the definition was just below that little declaration. LMAO Strangely enough, today is my birthday (75) - I think the universe is trying to tell me something. EDIT: I just saw that I have the 2024 version of the dictionary. Last edited by LordP; 10-02-2024 at 10:41 AM. |

Once you download the dicthtml-en-en.zip, you'll have to place it in the Kobo/custom-dict folder. Then when you look up any word, there's going to be a drop down on the dictionary pop-up to switch the dictionary. Last edited by xyclonei; 10-02-2024 at 03:30 PM. |

The Kobo supplied version of the 2019 OED has entymology (see my screenshots in a previous message). You would need to find that file for use on your Kobo. If you do backups of your Kobo's exposed storage, you might find a copy in an older backup.

Thanks xyclonei & DNSB.
I'll try the Wikititionary. To be clear...prior to my screwup and "upgrade" to the 2019 dictionary, my normal "English" dictionary had the etymology descriptions. I did not have a "Custom" dictionary. Now, after my factory reset, the "English" dictionary says 2024 at the bottom, and the "English (Custom) dictionary -- from the first page of this post -- does not have a date and neither one has the etymology. I guess my point is that the 2019 version does NOT have the etymology sections as someone had stated above. At least, not what can be downloaded from this post. I was hoping that someone who has a..normal?...English dictionary that HAS the etymology could share the link where they got it. Sadly, I don't have backups. EDIT: Wow. I like the Wikititionary version. I replaced the "English" dictionary instead of using it as the "Custom" and it's working almost as well as what I used yesterday. It's odd to see the etymology on top rather than the end, but I'm ok with that. Thank you xyclonei, I can now proceed to drink my Champagne and toast all the people in my past. The 2019 dictionary I am referring to is the one that was downloaded from Kobo's site before the 2024 version replaced it. As shown in my screenshots in message #22 in this thread, the 2024 dictionary did not show etymology while the 2019 one did.

Thanks, I may try to extract the 2019 version from another Kobo I have that is not updated and add it to this one. Presumably I would have to repeat this process for any future firmware upgrades also.
On a lesser point, I keep hoping Kobo will add a Latin English dictionary to the official set. Their choices seem a little odd, I mean why a Dutch-French dictionary? Sent from my Pixel Fold using Tapatalk |

IIRC Amazon doesn't have a stranglehold on the European market the way it does in the US, so Kobo is perhaps more popular than Kindle in the EU. I would guess that Kobo decides to include dictionaries based on which countries buy the most book from other countries that speak a different language.

@DNSB:
Ah. I thought you were referring to the first page of this post. The link provided by rtiangha, on the first page, is labeled thus: English (Oxford University Press 2019) |
