This seems to be working for centering text on a page.
Code:
<table width="100%" height="100%"> <tr> <td style="verticalAlign:middle"> <p class="Section_Name"><a id="TOC1_1"></a>Harold's Story</p> </td> </tr> </table> |

@m610
They used Tables because there was not a better way to position things. What we have now is way more flexible and re-scalable. Now we only need the apps to allow the user preference to scale the Publishers style rather than either OURS or Theirs |

One down, three to go, and this book, my first ebook, will be done.

If you do nor override the Start, Devices open the first file in the book. For EPUB2, that is the cover.
If you want to use the Editor , 2 steps you add the Image file, right-click the filename: mark as cover. You create a 'cover page' , place the image and any text. Then right-click that filename; mark as cover Both items must be marked. Why not Use Calibre Metadata Editor? Simply fill out the form, drop the prepared cover (Generate Cover tool). save (OK) Then Polish this into your book (that must be in the Library) Presto. A cover (titlepage.xhtml and Jacket.xhtml ) |

One thing. Don't use a space in any of the filenames. If you want a space use an underscore instead.

That seems to be the case when a .mobi file is created whereas a azw3/KF8 file can use variable widths. Vague memories that that only image sizing in mobi requires using pixels so no % or other variable sizing.

Thanks for the tips. That sent me on a search here and I found something that I thought might help, and in part it did.
Code:
img.Image_Style_70 { border: none; max-width: 70%; width: 70%; } |

It looks like I am going to have to concede that my problem with images is in the Kindle device itself. This makes me wonder if the problem would show up on other devices.
It seems odd to me that with the whole ebook thing now being quite a few years old by now that something like this, along with other compatibility issues I have read about, are still a thing on such basic issues. If you all don't mind I'd like to post a portion of the book here again, and if you don't mind, try it out on your own reader and let me know what you find. |

As long as you are the copyright owner, it is your choice on what you do or not post.

I poked around my Kindle a bit more and found a place where I can select the font to use. So, that explains why the fonts I wanted to use do not show up. This sucks. The author should be able to specify the font. It's all part of the look and feel of the book. On the other hand, it probably simplifies the matter of fonts and the right to use them in ebooks.
So it looks like I'll be giving up on sizing images over 50% width to anything less than 100%. Two down and one to go, that last one being fiddling around to get the cover to be the "start" page. Thanks for all the help. Mike |

I'm sure I've seen discussions in the past that Amazon do not allow you to select the cover page as the starting page
