Friday night a neighbour came by to tell us she's not home for a couple of day/week since her mother is dying. Her 17 year old son will be home alone for that time (his father lives nearby). She already warned us that on Saturday night he was going to have some friends over, so we might hear some noise. She also told he he initially wanted to have his friends over for multiple days, but she nixed that.
Last night I didn't hear anything. Until some time during the night. When it was raining fairly hard. Someone set off fireworks outside. I didn't get up to look, so I'm not 100% sure it's the son, but I think it's there's a fairly high chance it was him and his friends. Luckily it didn't last long and I went back to sleep quickly. For reference, in the Netherlands you're only allowed to set off fireworks From 6pm on December 31 until 2am on January 1. And consumer fireworks is only allowed to be sold on 28, 29 and 30 December. |

When the school summer vacations were about to start we had a couple of days when fireworks, very light fireworks, was set off throughout the neighbourhood during the day. Especially the alleys between the backs of houses was a popular spot. I assume those were school kids. |

Velocity, yes. It's a very popular baseball analytic that announcers are now all regurgitating. My personal feeling is that if "velocity" seems too lengthy to fit into normal conversation, maybe try "speed". It's only one syllable compared to velo's two.
1) A pitcher's "velo going down" may indicate an issue. 2) The "exit velo" of a ball off the bat is a metric that might be useful to managers and statisticians, but is not relevant to a fan's excitement for (or disappointment of) a home run. My preference would be for all baseball announcers to stop using it altogether. Immediately. My preference will of course be completely ignored in favor of pointlessly jargoning up simple concepts. It's not just jargon in a particular field, it's all those darned kids. "Agro" for aggressiveness, "rizz" for charisma. I'm becoming curmudgeonly, if not downright misanthropic these days. My mood is aggravated (that would be a slightly more sensible meaning for 'agro'), no doubt, by the fact that I was laid-off in February and have not found steady reemployment yet. Kind of hating the world. |

@DiapDealer: Oh, yeah, I can see that. I'm prone toward acronyms, myself but I'm far less enthused about this shortening. I'm a loon about things like "judgement" now being "judgment" and "acknowledgement" being "acknowledgment." WHY? ONE BLEEDING LETTER, for...ugh. Hitch |

Found out the hard way that my rain jacket has developed leaks in the shoulder seams - finished my walk with water running down both arms ... *sigh*
Any recommendations for reasonably priced replacement? My newly ventilated jacket is a Zorrel that's not made any more. |
