If you have store credit on your account in one region, I know you can't spend it in another region, but do you get the credit back after you return to your original region? I'm tempted to "travel" to pick these up.

*edit*

Never mind, store credit gets automatically converted to the new currency. I have safely returned from my trip.

Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned: Stories by Wells Tower is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Got it on Ian Mond's recommendation
Quote:
Viking marauders descend on a much-plundered island, hoping some mayhem will shake off the winter blahs. A man is booted out of his home after his wife discovers that the print of a bare foot on the inside of his windshield doesn’t match her own. Teenage cousins, drugged by summer, meet with a reckoning in the woods. A boy runs off to the carnival after his stepfather bites him in a brawl.

In the stories of Wells Tower, families fall apart and messily try to reassemble themselves. His version of America is touched with the seamy splendor of the dropout, the misfit: failed inventors, boozy dreamers, hapless fathers, wayward sons. Combining electric prose with savage wit, Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned is a major debut, announcing a voice we have not heard before.

Joffe's free book today is a "gripping historical adventure": Pearl of the Orient by Christopher Nicole. It's the first in his Pearl of the Orient series.

I do wish Joffe would ease off on the all the "gripping" and "thrilling" and "heartwarming" extra adjectives in their descriptions. Or at least use some adjectives that actually provide some info about the book. I wonder if that stuff works - presumably Joffe thinks it does. But they pretty much just annoy me. Oh well, rant now over...

Spoiler:
Quote:
During the early 19th century, Europe lies in tatters at the feet of Napoleon’s conquering army…

Yet the Dutch and British continue to clash for supremacy in the Far East, where princes and traders vie for influence and riches among the people.

Teng Lee, an opportunity seeking merchant, dreams of leaving China and settling down in paradise.

He currently works as a roving diplomat between the struggling countries and colonies of Southeast Asia, but he longs to be free.

It’s not long before he senses a chance to set himself up forever after crossing paths with Stamford Raffles, a visionary young colonial official who dreams of conquests to expand Britain’s growing empire.

After the beautiful Elizabeth Blaine is kidnapped by pirates, Lee sees a chance to play one country against another in an international chess game, where he is sure to emerge as the winner.

But he doesn’t count on affairs of the heart getting in the way in The Pearl of the Orient.

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid is $3 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US. Was on my wishlist for a while.

Quote:
A gripping novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer, revealing the mystery behind their infamous breakup—from the author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Malibu Rising, and Carrie Soto Is Back

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: NPR, The Washington Post, Esquire, Glamour, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, Parade, Paste, Shelf Awareness, BookRiot

Everyone knows DAISY JONES & THE SIX, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with Daisy Jones & The Six, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

On Strike Against God: A Love Story by Joanna Russ is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Was on my wishlist due to this review by Ilana Masad:
When Realism Is More Powerful Than Science Fiction - In On Strike Against God, Joanna Russ imagined a freer world while confronting its inequities head-on
Quote:
A radical novel of love, gender, and being seen for who you are from the groundbreaking author of The Female Man.

Meet Esther, an English professor. Since her divorce more than a decade ago, she has lived in a kind of limbo—a sexless, cold, and self-contained existence. Though surrounded by so-called intellectuals, she is still boxed into life according to her gender, expected to defer to her male colleagues and mocked for her feminist beliefs.

But when Esther’s feelings for her friend Jean take a turn from the platonic to the passionate, a new world opens up before her. Lost in a tumult of lust and happiness, she is unprepared for the patriarchal voices in her own head that threaten to derail her newfound freedom. Societal chaos would ensue if she were to follow her heart. It would open the floodgates to boys wearing pink! And girls, blue! How would the world survive?

In On Strike Against God, Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author Joanna Russ turns from science fiction to 1970s small-town life, where desire simmers in the shadows, rebellion is taking root, and humor becomes a weapon against the status quo.

To So Few: A Novel of the Battle of Britain is the first in the Harry Rose series
by Russell Sullman

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XVFF3L2
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07XVFF3L2

Spoiler:
Quote:
It is the Summer of 1940, and France has fallen to the invincible steamroller that is the might of Nazi Germany; Britain now stands alone, and the future looks bleak.

Pilot Officer Harry Rose, fresh from training and eager to prove himself, is posted to Excalibur Squadron, a Hawker Hurricane fighter unit based in southern England.

In the coming weeks and months of that fateful summer, as the outnumbered RAF battle grimly with the Luftwaffe in the skies above Britain, Rose will come to know what it is to love, and will experience both the glorious euphoria of success and the desperate bitterness of loss. As his friends dwindle in number, Rose knows that it can be only a matter of time before it is his turn...

The Plague by Albert Camus with a new(ish) translation by Laura Marris is available for $1.99:

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-plague-37
https://www.amazon.com/Plague-Albert...dp/B08WCMY3GF/

Quote:
**“We can finally read the work as Camus meant it to be read. Laura Marris’s new translation of The Plague is, quite simply, the translation we need to have.” —Los Angeles Review of Books

The first new translation of The Plague to be published in the United States in more than seventy years, bringing the Nobel Prize winner's iconic novel to a new generation of readers. • "A redemptive book, one that wills the reader to believe, even in a time of despair*." —The Washington Post***

The townspeople of Oran are in the grip of a deadly plague, which condemns its victims to a swift and horrifying death. Fear, isolation, and claustrophobia follow as they are forced into quarantine. Each person responds in their own way to the lethal disease: some resign themselves to fate, some seek blame, and a few, like Dr. Rieux, resist the terror.

An immediate triumph when it was published in 1947, The Plague is in part an allegory of France's suffering under the Nazi occupation, as well as a timeless story of bravery and determination against the precariousness of human existence. In this fresh yet careful translation, award-winning translator Laura Marris breathes new life into Albert Camus's ever-resonant tale. Restoring the restrained lyricism of the original French text, and liberating it from the archaisms and assumptions of the previous English translation, Marris grants English readers the closest access we have ever had to the meaning and searing beauty of The Plague.

This updated edition promises to add relevance and urgency to a classic novel of twentieth-century literature.

Like I said, I strongly suspect this is an unauthorized eprint, given that the regular offering from Simon & Schuster is still $12.99. But, grab while you can, I suppose.
For anyone who got this version or plans to in the future: I briefly compared it to my physical copy, and while it looks 98% good, there are a number of places where they missed italicizing words. For free I can deal with it, but for more cash, be aware of what you're buying.
