Two questions for you: 1. Do you know any apps to montor/log connections and block based on IP AND DNS that is not VPN based? 2. I noticed some browsers (like fulguris) seem to lose their ability to download when AFWall is on, even with that browser whitelisted. Seems only the ones that rely solely android system download manager (1dm browser, has it's own, and has no problem downloading when whiltelisted). But even whitelisting UID 10044 (download manager etc) doesn't help. Any thoughts on how to solve this? Thanks again! |

AFWall+ has the logging capability. Enable logs, then go try your downloads. It will tell which IPs/hosts are trying to connect. Then you decide whether to trust them and enable them.
UID 1000 is tricky, it encapsulates EVERYTHING android-system-related, including those apps that Onyx probably modified. Download manager has a different UID. I was using Yandex Browser with download manager on. I mean, without Download Manager even KOReader cannot update itself. |

I tried to autostart it, but each time the device is powered on (i.e. not from sleep mode) it seems AFwall has to be started again. Does autostart work in your setup and if so how did you accomplish it?

For those, who prefer to not root their device I recommend combination of Rething DNS app for firewall and NextDNS as private DNS. Rething DNS app supports even Wireguard.
You have control over traffic and block whatever you want without rooting device. Last edited by sunkashi; 05-09-2024 at 06:50 AM. |

Interesting topic, thanks!
I just received a Boox Page to play a bit with.... and I was horrified on how much it calls home. Coming from de-Googled and privacy friendly Android versions (CalyxOS)....it's astonishing. So far, I'll only go with Blokada first, block little by little the addresses Boox calls home. "pm disable" did not seem to work that much for example, the voice recorder could still be launched after a pm disable (which went successfully). Only the pm uninstall allowed me to really get rid of it. |

Honestly, I'm not sure because I've uninstalled most of the Onyx packages when I took the device out of the box. It’s possible that the performance and battery life have improved since there are fewer background processes running.

Thanks for this, I've used your debloat post to reduce my Page to what I want, just an e-reader. I've attempted to follow several guides/posts about the process of rooting a Boox. Though i have no experience doing this, I've gotten a patched .img file through magisk and gotten to the fastboot boot ".img".
adb reboot fastboot - no issues fastboot devices - shows device is connected fastboot boot boot_patched.img - I renamed the patched file, but when i enter the command it produces a message stating: FAILED (remote: 'unknown command') fastboot: error: Command failed I've also attempted the process starting with: adb reboot bootloader - fails as well Should I be using the EDL method to root? |

I'm attempting root using EDL, with Qualcomm662.elf, zadig, and fasboot driver. I'm getting this error:
edl.exe /l662.elf Found EDL 9008, handshaking... version 2.1 HWID: 0014d0e100000000, JTAG: 0014d0e1, OEM: 0000, Model: 0000 Hash: d40eee56f3194665-574109a39267724a-e7944134cd53cb76-7e293d3c40497955-bc8a4519ff992b03-1fadc6355015ac87 (x3) Sending 662.elf 100% ok, starting... ok, waiting for Firehose... <log value="ERROR: Call to ufs_open(0, UFS_WLUN_DEVICE) failed:0" /> Ok Sorry if this is something obvious, I'll go through the other posts and see if I'm clearly missing something important. |
