Crash by J. G. Ballard is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
In Ballard's hallucinatory novel, the car provides the hellish tableau in which Vaughan, a "TV scientist" turned "nightmare angel of the highways," experiments with erotic atrocities among auto crash victims, each more sinister than the last. James Ballard, his friend and fellow obsessive, tells the story of this twisted visionary as he careens rapidly toward his own demise in an intentionally orchestrated car crash with Elizabeth Taylor. A classic work of cutting edge fiction, Crash explores the disturbing potentialities of contemporary society's increasing dependence on technology as intermediary in human relations.

Rebellion is the twenty-second and most recent (until October) in Simon Scarrow's Cato/Macro Eagles of the Empire series. It's £0.99 right now in the UK, probably only for today.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BNC3ZP1G
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/reb...s-of-empire-22

Spoiler:
Quote:
An epic military adventure novel pits Roman army heroes Macro and Cato against Boudica: the terrifying Queen of the Britons. From bestselling Simon Scarrow, author of Death to the Emperor and The Honour of Rome

1st-century Britannia is the setting for an epic and action-packed novel of tribal uprisings, battles to the death and unmatched courage in the Roman army ranks.

The 22nd Eagles of the Empire novel.

Two heroes of the Roman army - Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro, now battle-scarred veterans, tough and resilient - lead their best men into the midst of an enemy both fearless and resourceful. Far from Rome in cold, rainy, unwelcoming Britannia, the soldiers need all their training to stand strong and undaunted as constant attacks challenge morale. And a leader like no other sends fear through the ranks: Boudica.

A stunning and unforgettable story of warfare, courage and sacrifice as brave men face an enemy who will fight to the death to free her people from the rule of the Empire!

Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses is on sale for £0.99 today at Amazon UK and Kobo UK.

Quote:
The Satanic Verses
Question: What is the opposite of faith? Not disbelief. Too final, certain, closed. Itself a kind of belief. Doubt.
Discover Salman Rushdie’s critically acclaimed magical realist study of good and evil.
'A masterpiece' -Sunday Times

Just before dawn one winter's morning, a plane blows apart high above the English Channel and two figures tumble, clutched in an embrace, towards the sea: Gibreel Farishta, India's legendary movie star, and Saladin Chamcha, the man of a thousand voices.
Washed up, alive, on an English beach, their survival is a miracle. But there is a price to pay. Gibreel and Saladin have been chosen as opponents in the eternal wrestling match between Good and Evil. But chosen by whom? And which is which? And what will be the outcome of their final confrontation?

'A great novelist, a master of perpetual storytelling' -V.S. Pritchett

Joffe's Free Friday books for today, and probably the weekend, include an ancient Roman-era adventure/thriller. It's The Centurion's Son, which is the first in the Path of Nemesis series by Adam Lofthouse.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077JZ9TH9
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B077JZ9TH9

Spoiler:
Quote:
Albinus, the son of a revered Roman veteran Silus, has always longed to be a farmer, not a soldier, and live his days ploughing and reaping the harvests, with his bride-to-be, Licina.

But Silus’ has darker ambitions, and wishes for Albinus to follow in his footsteps in the army. As the conflicts between father and son come to a head, a growing threat comes down from the vengeful Germanic tribes to the north. Just as Albinus and Licina are about to marry, their settlement is raided by barbarians and Silus and his veteran comrades are brutally killed, while Licina is kidnapped by the raiders and taken to their king as a gift.

Believing her to be alive, Albinus sets out on a quest to find Licina, finally fulfilling his father’s wishes. As the barbarian hordes gather and plan major rebellion against the Romans, Albinus finds a new fighting spirit within him and grows in stature among the legionaries. Licina meanwhile has a fight of her own, to escape from slavery and find Albinus. Time is running out, as the northern tribes head for Rome, decimating everything in their path …

With historically accurate details and including characters from legend, Adam Lofthouse’s novel recounts the brutal battles between the Romans and the Germanic tribes, while also telling the heart-wrenching coming-of-age narrative of one young soldier within the Roman camp.

There are also a mystery and a romance going for free, and posted in the appropriate threads.

Joffe’s Free Friday books this week include a thriller, a romance, and a Napoleonic-era historical novel. They are free today, and probably – but not certainly – through the weekend.

The free historical novel is The King's Bounty by Sara Fraser.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CGY88XFY
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CGY88XFY

Spoiler:
Quote:
On a November evening in 1812, Jethro Stanton, son of a Luddite and needle-pointer of Redditch town, stops at a remote wayside alehouse in Shropshire to find himself drawn into the life and fortunes of one Turpin Wright.

This irrepressible rogue, fleeing the gallows, is evading a troop of dragoons trying to recapture him. When Jethro comes to his rescue they both become outlaws . . .

The pair take to the road. Their way leads them through colourful rustic fairs and a chilling interlude ‘sin-eating’ for the dead in the Welsh hills, to alehouse brawls and, finally, the arms of the Recruiters — and the rough life of a reserve company of Grenadiers in lusty, bustling Portsmouth.

Among sailors and strumpets, vagabonds and cardsharps, officers and gentry, they meet Sarah Jenkins, there to try and free a French prisoner of war from the prison hulks in Portsmouth Sound.

Against a rumbustious background of England during the Napoleonic Wars, Jethro’s story is one filled with love and adventure.

The other two books are posted in their appropriate threads.

On a mission to safeguard this movement, Captain Tom Caine’s SAS patrol is diverted by a strange emergency signal that draws them to a derelict aircraft and a mysterious black box. Besieged by a Nazi Death’s Head unit intent on retrieving the box and betrayed by a comrade who steals it, Caine must make a choice. Joffe's Free Friday books this week, still free as of Sunday morning, when I'm posting this, are a mystery, a set of spy thrillers, and a historical novel. The mystery and the thrillers are posted in that thread, and here's the info on the historical novel.

Secrets in the Heather by Gwen Kirkwood is the first in the series of the same name.
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5HGB84V
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B5HGB84V

Spoiler:
Quote:
Secrets in the Heather is set in early twentieth century Scotland, where one woman’s life is haunted by a secret.

Little Victoria Pringle, orphaned at birth, has been raised by the woman she believes to be her great-grandmother, in a cottage on the Darlonachie Estate. When Jane McCrady dies, Victoria is offered a home by the Pringle family, tenants of Sir William Crainby, Laird of Darlonachie. The Pringle brothers, especially Andrew, take Victoria under their wing, and she is allowed to work in the kitchens of the castle, once the domain of Mistress McCrady.

But times change in the years after the First World War, and a new generation is holding sway at the castle, both above and below stairs. As Victoria grows into a beautiful young woman, and a talented cook, she faces new choices and opportunities, and must come to terms with a long-buried secret in her past.

Secrets in the Heather is a heartwarming tale of love, set in the beautiful Scottish countryside and featuring a cast of well-drawn characters. It is the first novel in a three-book series of the same name, and is a treat for Gwen Kirkwood’s many fans, as well as readers who enjoy romantic and/or rural fiction.

Joffe are now doing a free book each day during the week, rather than three free on Friday. Sigh! It was hard enough to remember Fridays.

Today's free book is a historical novel/naval adventure, Scarlett, by Christopher C Tubbs, and it's the first in his Scarlett Fox series. And at the moment, at least, this one is only free at Kindle US, not at Kindle UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CTKLKQ84
Kindle UK (price-check): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CTKLKQ84

Spoiler:
Quote:
1660. The Royal Navy is establishing itself as the world’s dominant naval power.

In Yorkshire, Scarlett Browning, daughter of prolific smuggler Smoker Browning, is establishing herself as a skilled sailor aboard her father’s ships.

Spotting the chance to legitimise their endeavours, Scarlett switches to privateering. With their letter of marque (proof of the English Crown’s consent), Scarlett and her crew head to the Channel. There they attack French and Spanish vessels, topping up the English Treasury — and their own coffers.

Scarlett proves herself a merciless captain, capable of silencing her enemies with cut-throat efficiency. One violent clash leaves her twin brother blinded — and fires up Scarlett’s bloodthirsty appetite for revenge.

She commandeers a French ship and heads to the Caribbean. There her ruthless raids come to the attention of the Spanish Inquisition, who are determined to seize and punish this ferocious female captain.

Scarlett finally comes face to face with an enemy even more savage than she is.

An enemy bent on destroying her whatever it takes.

I'm suspicious about whether this is legitimate or not, but, Catch-22 is free today on both Kindle US and Kobo US from publisher Horizon Ridge Publishing:

https://www.amazon.com/Catch-22-Jose...dp/B0D8GSJB54/
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/catch-22-28

Like I said, I strongly suspect this is an unauthorized eprint, given that the regular offering from Simon & Schuster is still $12.99. But, grab while you can, I suppose.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is $2.99 from the usual vendors.

Didn't get around to posting this on Saturday, but somehow it's still on sale, so, anyone interested should grab it while they can! First time it's dropped since McCarthy passed, I think.
