Modern replacement for Kindle Oasis?

Hello folks.

My beloved Kindle Oasis is on the last legs, so I'm looking for a direct replacement:

- Page turn buttons, ambidextrous reader body.
- 6-8" display, 300 PPI.
- B/W. I only use Kindle for books, so I don't want to sacrifice PPI for color.
- Reasonable battery life.
- Reasonably light, preferably under 240g
- Backlight

However it's been a while since 2016, so I'd expect some improvements:

- Much snappier interface, both due to better eInk drivers, and due to faster CPUs
- USB-C connector

Any suggestions?

I saw https://comparisontabl.es/e-readers/ — it helps to narrow down search a lot, however there is no "snappy interface" filter there, alas.

The Sage is snappier than the Libra (the latter is not all that snappy), but the Libra has better battery life. The buttons on both of them are not as good as on the Oasis models (all 3 of those), but IMO usable.

I have Libra, Libra2 and Sage.
The buttons are only 100% reliable on the original Libra.

The Sage has the poorest run time per charge of all my modern readers, but enough, I can read 3 full novels. Also has the fastest charge time on a compatible charger of 45 to 50 minutes from nearly exhausted to nearly full. Occasionally I have to swipe if I stare too long at a page, then buttons are OK again.

I had an Oasis 2. I rate all three Kobo models better, except the buttons on the Sage. The charge run time on the Oasis was poorer than the Sage, but it wasn't new. Still Ok. A friend has it now.
I still have a PW3, K3 and DXG.

The Sage is faster.

I also have an Elipsa, bought a few weeks before the Sage. It's pointless, but better than a reMarkable.

Does the Sage support a faster charging standard than the Libra, or does it just charge quickly because the battery is so small?

From my limited testing, a mix of both. The Sage has a higher charge current and a smaller battery.

I think that's true.

Yes. the Sage will use more current on some 2A chargers, but not all. I think 1.5A. A Lenovo Yoga Tab 10 charger and the TCL Qualcomm standard multivoltage charger seem to do the 1.5A.

The Libra 2 might be 1A max with a compatible charger.
Both are 0.5A with some 1A and 2A chargers and most USB ports on computers, even USB 3.x type A or C.

The Sage, like the Oasis, was supposed to have a power cover. It allegedly doesn't work well and there are maybe 6 or 8 strong rectangular magnets inside the Sage, maybe to hold the cover. Four pads that are not USB for the cover (+, - and either sensing or signalling).
The case opens easily enough to replace the battery, but the small PCB with pads is on the back connected with a ribbon to the main PCB, mounted on the display chassis on the front panel.·

Kobo Sage (snappy, 8" display, a little on the heavy side) Screen is marvelous. Battery life, OK, but won't be as good as most e-readers. Dropbox and Google Drive support, stylus and notebook support.

Pocketbook Era (sometimes slower than my Oasis 2, sometimes faster, 7" display) Screen is nice, close to my Oasis 2, battery life good, has Pocketbook Cloud integration, so you can get sync for side-loaded books. Built-in speaker for audiobooks and text-to-speech.

Both are nice readers! Kobo Sage is more mainstream and with an easier UI, Pocketbook has some nice customization options for the UI. If you prefer a larger screen, go Kobo Sage, if you like a more compact 7" screen, the Pocketbook Era is a bit smaller than my Oasis 2.

I don't know how the Pocketbook store compares to the Kobo store. I plan on continuing to use the Kobo store for purchases.

You can see my thoughts on the Pocketbook Era at: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=362434

If I had to choose between the two, it would be Sage, hands down. But I am older, and I use slightly larger font-sizes (14-16pt) and love the amount of text I can have on the Sage screen. However, that said, you definitely get more text on the Pocketbook Era screen than you do with the Kindle Oasis, because the minimal margin setting is much smaller.

EDIT: If you are dependent on Kindle Whispersync and cloud backup of reading progress or annotations for Send-to-Kindle content, the Pocketbook Era might be your best bet. Kobo does not have sync available for side-loaded content, only for purchases from their store.
