Kindle Scribe - Error communicating with device
Hi everyone. I updated today to the latest Calibre version 7.14 and now I get the below error message and don't know what else to do:
calibre, version 7.14.0 ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device 's10001' Traceback (most recent call last): File "calibre\gui2\device.py", line 112, in run File "calibre\gui2\device.py", line 596, in _sync_booklists File "calibre\devices\mtp\driver.py", line 370, in sync_booklists File "calibre\devices\mtp\driver.py", line 360, in write_metadata_cache File "calibre\devices\mtp\driver.py", line 200, in put_calibre_file File "calibre\devices\mtp\windows\driver.py", line 37, in check_thread File "calibre\devices\mtp\windows\driver.py", line 447, in put_file File "calibre\devices\mtp\windows\driver.py", line 37, in check_thread File "calibre\devices\mtp\windows\driver.py", line 431, in delete_file_or_folder File "calibre\devices\mtp\filesystem_cache.py", line 120, in parent KeyError: 's10001' I am using a Kindle Scribe and I have never had such issues until today. Please advise what can I do to fix this? So far, I have restarted the device (the laptop as well), and deleted the driveinfo.calibre and metadata. calibre files to force a rescan. Sadly, the issue was not fixed. I really don't want to reset the Scribe as it would be a hassle to put everything back and re-index, etc. so please tell me if there is another solution I can try. Not sure if this is related to some new bug in the latest Calibre version, but I can say with certainty that with the previous Calibre version there were no issues whatsoever (aside from the problems with the squished cover thumbnails that everyone experienced). Thank you 🙏 |

I'm having the same issue. It started right after updating to the latest version. Despite the error, it does complete the initiating task.
I've swapped around USB cables, tries multiple ports, etc. It has no faulty properties when it's connected and I scan my system for details on PnP devices, either. Moreover, when I have some more time I will try a few other things to see if I can isolate an issue on my end. |

Hi,
Same issue here. Freshly received Fire HD 10. I downgraded to Calibre to 6.29 (https://download.calibre-ebook.com/6.29.0/). It's working properly and way faster. I have not tried other version 7. |

I have opened a bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/calibre/+bug/2073323
There was a change to the MTP Driver file causing this bug in the 7.14 release. MTP driver: Fix infinite loop when connecting to some devices with more 65K objects in their filesystem Closes tickets: 2072384 |

Quote:
Open your kindle in windows explorer. Find the file driveinfo.calibre on it and delete it. That should fix the error. |

Update: This did not permanently fix the issue. A fix has been made and will be released in the next Calibre version per developer.

How does one get more than 65K file objects on a Scribe? (I have only a bit over 6000).
I have noticed that the File IDs regenerate with each MTP session on Scribe, so with enough sessions the IDs can be greater than 65k. Perhaps that is the issue, but if so I cannot reproduce it on macOS. Restarting Scribe resets starting File ID to zero. |
