I'll leave it at that then, thanks for your help anyway. It might be some new encryption or something but that'd be my speculation not my knowledge so don't quote me on that.
What is the starting format?
I thought I only shared the 2010 variant. Can't remember finding the 2019 variant, let alone the 2024 variant.

Ah, so that one can't be the problem. And the format of the 2024 edition?

Well no, the 2019 one indeed is in the format that works; as it is on the pCloud. I'm having trouble with taking the 2024 one through the same process. As far as I know it's just a dictionary; the Van Dale GWHN 2024 edition. I don't even know if it's new or if it's just the copyright that gets updated on the Kobo device; as I've been unable to (as the instructions) see the difference between the one on my device and the one that became the 2019 edition on pCloud. I don't know if I've made myself clear.

Ah, so you have to convert the Kobo dictionary to a recognizable format first. I think there are scripts/converters that do that. Search this forum for that.

A low level comparison would be word count, than differences in words-entries, than differences in description.

I don't think that modern 'updates' really improve/change much for the VanDale.

There is a VanDale 1898* that is really good: It's from before the uniformization of Dutch language. Would love to have that one in a convertible format.
Also, I would love to have the Dutch Etymology (pink cover) in digital format. It's nice to have them in the bookcase, but I only take it out for my kids.
Yep, those are basically the only things the GWHN 2019 misses out on for me.

Hello, I am looking for a Spanish-Russian dictionary for pocketbook, do you know if there is a ready-made one?

Hi,

I've used converter3.exe to generate what I hope is a Swedish to English pocketbook dictionary using some updated Swedish language files (the ones I found on github were just copied from German) and the publicly available xdxf from the folkets lexikon

It seems to have worked but I can't currently test it as I left my reader in a different country sadly. If anyone has the time to check it loads properly on a pocketbook reader and if so add it to the list of available dictionaries that would be awesome. Happy to 'buy you a coffee' if you do.

Otherwise I'll try it when I get my reader back.

Thanks

@user1245465 Thanks for looking at the sv-files. I saw that the collates-file contained 'Ø', but the keyboard didn't. Why is that? Shouldn't you be able to type it? Or can you get it with a key-combination?

Hi Markismus,

It's little confusing as it is on the keyboard but is not in fact a Swedish letter. These days there is one keyboard for Danish, Norwegian and Swedish (A Nordic keyboard) the only difference is the two keys to the right of the L key produce different letters:

Swedish: ö and ä
Danish: æ and ø
Norwegian: ø and æ

So I've copied the Danish files and substituted ö for æ and ä for ø. I looked at the collates files and they appeared to contain pretty much every variation of a, o including the Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and other languages so I just left it as it was.

In fact I'm still not convinced that the keyboard files are completely correct as they contain the German ü which doesn't exist on the Nordic keyboard but I couldn't find a detailed description of the file format and it doesn't appear to be as simple as typing what's on the keyboard rows on each line (for example the p and å appear on the third row after the m in the keyboard file and not on the first line after the o as they do on the physical keyboard?), so I left the ü in there since it was in the original Danish keyboard file but think it's probably wrong.

If anyone can point me in the direction of a description of the keyboard file format I'd be very happy to produce one for each of the Nordic languages.

The same goes for the morphems.txt file which I suspect should contain å, ö and ä in what looks to be the vowel section (%1=aeiouy).

If anyone can point me at a description of the format I'd be happy to produce an updated version for each of the Nordic languages.

We don't have descriptions or docs or whatever, that is the crappy reality of the thing.

Together with @ezdiy we made it work a bit better. I checked and corrected xdxf-files in the script so that convert.exe would crash, while he hacked the binary convert.exe file to allow larger strings, iirc.

Nowadays the script seems to be used most for request to convert obscure mobi-formats to xdxf and then to pocketbook dic-format or Stardict.

I suspected that was the case. The only description I could find for converter.exe was some very simple instructions (in Russian) for running the executable on windows.

When I (hopefully) get my device back I may have a look to see what if anything I can figure out about those files (assuming my dictionary actually loads onto the device properly of course).

Thanks for the replies.

Thank you. The bit about the morphemes.txt is actually helpful I think I can improve the Swedish one considerably and possibly even the collates.txt

Thank you
