Any Kindle old enough to not have touch is way over a decade old. The firmware versions they run are all jailbroken. The only ones that would update to a version that is not yet jailbroken are 10th gen and newer models. Anything 9th gen or older can be jailbroken.

A Kindle is a crap shoot. So don't ever buy one unless you are willing to use it without a JB.

Would you advice me to get another e-reader? which one could I get that has page turn buttons and good software support on a budget? (I know it's much to ask for but if I gotta move from mine it's gotta be a good upgrade)

If you don't like the software, you can easily install KOReader (no guarantee you will like that better, of course - I do not). |

I bought a KT3 (Touch Kindle 8th Gen) on eBay in the last week.
The final firmware for that is the last one that LanguageBreak works on so you can't really go wrong with that. Jailbroke it, added KUAL, Doom (just because it can run Doom), Gambatte-K (Gameboy Color emulator), and KOReader, and Sox Music Player. LanguageBreak is much more fiddly than the Jailbreak on my old Kindle 3/Keyboard was but got there in the end, there's a good video of someone doing it on Youtube which helps. |

There is an exploit for devices up to 5.6.7, but someone would need to do the steps to go from exploit to actual jailbreak.
There, erm, "may" be exploits in the current firmware, but I doubt anyone will discuss those until after 5.6.10 or later comes out. In general, if you want to be jailbroken, just keep your device away from the Amazon mothership and be patient. |

Because you can get JB on 5.16.2 then upgrade (then restore JB) and use new hf-packages.
Long story short, 5.16.3 uses new libraries (hard floats, hf). Most of the packages are not compatible. Only a fee got recompiled by Marek. See https://fw.notmarek.com/khf/ |

I just got the kobo sage. A bit pricey ($269+tax), but fantastic. Installed KOreader right away and never went back to their UI. You can get their Libra 2 for $200. That one has buttons, too

Does JB give you some persistence even if you update? Maybe I'm coming from a baremetal perspective where DFU usually mean a total reflash of the postupdate active partition. |

Nope. You get JB once on a firmware. Then if you get updated, you need to restore it. That’s why people try to prevent OTA so that JB won’t break.
