Does Amazon care what you send through Send to Kindle?
My wife owns a nook and I own a Kindle. I've been staying with my parents the last 3 weeks.
Last night, my wife's nook stopped charging and she was in the middle of reading a book. My Kindle Paperwhite was home. I told my wife to charge it, and used NoDRM to download and decrypt the book she was reading. I then threw the ePub into Send to Kindle and my wife was able to resume reading. How much does Amazon care about you sending an ePub of a book they sell through Send to Kindle? I don't want to get my account banned over something like this. |

I have sent many DeDRM'd ebooks to my Kindles using send to Kindle with no repercussions.
I have not seen any comments on the web about losing access because of sending books through Send to Kindle. As best I can tell, Amazon doesn't care. |

Yes, they prefer you send deDRMed, or no DRM and books not from Amazon. Which is why it doesn't accept Kindle formats, but everyone else's format.
So for epubs they don't care. Except they might prefer you to use the service rather than USB transfer. [Tongue firmly in cheek!] It might be stupid to remove DRM from a KU title (even if bought at full price without a sub or borrow), convert to ePub and use STK. Amazon might assume the author published the book elsewhere. Amazon has even blocked authors from KU (which is exclusive, even the author can give free copies!) when the Amazon bot has found those titles on pirate sites, as if the author would be so stupid! So they are bit crazy. STK content is supposed to be private to you or else Amazon is breaking copyright if it's copyright material (also in EU, GDPR), so they'd be in bigger trouble than you if they started making an issue about STK content. I've sent tons of PDFs using Send to Kindle to my Scribe. But this was the first time I sent books that Amazon sells.

How do I (or can I) get calibre to visually indicate to me that a title in my calibre library is now on my Kindle when I've used STK?
On occasion, I've forgotten that I used STK for a title, and then, at a later date transferred the same title when my Kindle was hooked up to my computer. Last edited by Dr. Drib; 05-31-2024 at 09:58 AM. |

However, Kindle doesn't have the ability to use Alexa Read Aloud Accessibility with books that were sent via Send-to-Kindle, so I am selling all of my Kindles except for one. Side note: the fact that people have to ask this question is another reason I am using devices that can load everything I want on-device without a whiff of internet: foreign language dictionaries, TTS, audiobooks, annotations. All 7th generation and later Kindles have VoiceView screen reader (English only). That will work with any book that supports screen reader, including send-to-kindle books (but not PDFs, I think). Alexa (the app) will read out books and play audiobooks purchased from Amazon that enable text to speech. It's available on Echo and Fire devices and from Google and Apple app stores. Fire also has text to speech (now called Assistive Voice). Neither Nook or Kobo have a screen reader or text to speech. If that's what you are looking for I would recommend a PocketBook device. |

Pocketbook app on Android is good for TTS. That can give longer run time on some phones and tablets than eink if the screen turns off as ereaders have small batteries and rely on sleeping while you read a page to get long run time.
The PW3 (needs USB adapter) and later Kindles have accessibility voice (voice view), rather than TTS, so navigation is voice prompted. The DXG and K3 have real TTS with the normal UI. Voiceview isn't for regular TTS, but for blind and partially sighted people. Some Kindle ebooks don't support it (or TTS on older Kindles) for DRM reasons. PDFs may not work on anything if they are scans. OCR text for search isn't great for TTS. I've not tested any text based PDFs on anything. Alexa has severe privacy issues and may need an Internet connection. |

To clarify my original post: I am talking about the Alexa app accessibility feature. Alexa apps on smartphones, Android tablets and the Alexa smart assistant echo devices have the ability to read aloud your Kindle and Audible books. However, this Accessibility Read Aloud feature is ONLY available for eBooks purchased from Amazon or library eBooks borrowed and sent through from OverDrive. Why Alexa app instead of just using VoiceView on a Kindle device? The Kindle devices only provide VoiceView in American English. It's one of the reasons I am moving to PocketBook. I am using Google Play Books a lot for this, but whenever my devices lose Wi-Fi connection, the audio narration skips words and it is difficult to keep pace with the text on the screen when this happens. It's unfortunate that PocketBook doesn't have voices for all the languages I would like, but it has the major ones for most of our eBooks. For the remainder, we will just have to keep using Google Play Books. Last edited by gforgiraffe39935; 06-02-2024 at 04:38 PM. Reason: clarity |

Assuming they have text. Some "Kindle" titles ought not to have Kindle branding.
