Hi! Looking for help with two-way contents links
Hi!
I make ebooks using the export function in Indesign but this only gives me one-way links from the TOC to chapters - I really need chapter headers to link back to the toc too - does anyone know of any calibre function that can help me with this? Thanks, Eubhal |

Why?
All 3 models of readers I have, have the TOC access independent of the chapter (page). I use the Devices TOC button. Even PC's PDF viewers have A TOC sidebar. The only thing not commonly done by ALL, is show the TOC at the current location (chapter). But if you insist. Keyword is 'Anchor' |

InDesign is an old DTP package for fixed layout paper/PDF, fudged for ebooks.
Use MS Word or LO Writer (edit in odt, but extra Save As in docx) Import docx to Calibre. Calibre shouldn't have to fudge for one of the worst programs in the world for creating reflowable ebooks. Indesign is also expensive and now can only be rented. Aldus designed it but never released/finished it before Adobe bought them. What you want is trivial in MS Word or LO Writer using bookmarks (which become HTML anchors in Calibre) and internal hyperlinks. Use Styles and no direct formatting except words in a paragraph that are bold, italic, superscript or subscript. DTP is now only for magazines, newspapers and some paper text books (though not absolutely needed for text books now). |

However you only link TOC to Chapters in real ebooks (and it can be automatic). The two-way links are really only for asides and footnotes because there is no "bottom of page" / footer / header in any real ebook format.
PDFs are electronic, but not ebooks. Fixed layout "ebooks" are simply a less portable version of PDFs and not proper ebooks. Real ebooks flow but are paginated for the window or screen size. Like picking a paper size equal to viewport/window size and doing "print preview" in a browser. |
