Non-fiction:
Evaporating Genres: Essays on Fantastic Literature by Gary K. Wolfe is $3 on Amazon.com (Full price on Kobo).
Wolfe is an editor and critic, mostly published in Locus, and the co-host of the Coode Street Podcast.
Review on Strange Horizons.
Quote:
In this wide-ranging series of essays, an award-winning science fiction critic explores how the related genres of science fiction, fantasy, and horror evolve, merge, and finally "evaporate" into new and more dynamic forms. Beginning with a discussion of how literary readers "unlearned" how to read the fantastic during the heyday of realistic fiction, Gary K. Wolfe goes on to show how the fantastic reasserted itself in popular genre literature, and how these genres themselves grew increasingly unstable in terms of both narrative form and the worlds they portray. More detailed discussions of how specific contemporary writers have promoted this evolution are followed by a final essay examining how the competing discourses have led toward an emerging synthesis of critical approaches and vocabularies. The essays cover a vast range of authors and texts, and include substantial discussions of very current fiction published within the last few years.

Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier is $2 in the US (Kobo US, Kobo WW, Amazon)
Quote:
High in the Transylvanian woods, at the castle Piscul Draculi, live five daughters and their doting father. It's an idyllic life for Jena, the second eldest, who spends her time exploring the mysterious forest with her constant companion, a most unusual frog. But best by far is the castle's hidden portal, known only to the sisters. Every Full Moon, they alone can pass through it into the enchanted world of the Other Kingdom. There they dance through the night with the fey creatures of this magical realm.

But their peace is shattered when Father falls ill and must go to the southern parts to recover, for that is when cousin Cezar arrives. Though he's there to help the girls survive the brutal winter, Jena suspects he has darker motives in store. Meanwhile, Jena's sister has fallen in love with a dangerous creature of the Other Kingdom--an impossible union it's up to Jena to stop.

When Cezar's grip of power begins to tighten, at stake is everything Jena loves: her home, her family, and the Other Kingdom she has come to cherish. To save her world, Jena will be tested in ways she can't imagine--tests of trust, strength, and true love.

Thanks! Been waiting for a price drop on this! I feel like my parents had this somewhere on their attic bookshelf, but I never got around to reading it.

Books 2 & 3 of Mercedes Lackey's The Founding of Valdemar trilogy are 99¢ each at various US retailers.

Into the West (Book 2):
https://amazon.com/dp/B09GVZTGXV
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/into-the-west-7

Valdemar (Book 3):
https://amazon.com/dp/B0BY7TCLSF
https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/valdemar-1

Into the West has been $1.99 in the past (as has book 1, Beyond). To the best of my knowledge, this is the first sale on Valdemar.

C.J. Cherryh's Hugo Award-winning _Downbelow Station_ is $1.99 at Amazon (and possibly other places):

The central story of her Alliance--Union universe, it was written so as to provide a backstory for _Merchanter's Luck_ which serves as an excellent entrée to that series.

I love the Alliance/Union books. Some of the best descriptions of extremely high velocity (significant fractions of light speed) and extremely long distance (measured in light minutes/hours) space battles I've come across. Highly recommended if hard SF is your thing but she does politics and character well too.

A classic.

Edit:
Sadly not on Amazon UK at all as an ebook!
I do have it on paper.

Thanks! I will also add that buying through Amazon, I was offered to add the Audible audiobook for $2.66. Weird price point but I wasn't going to argue.
