Kindle Devices DeDRM works on
basically what I am looking for is how old does a Kindle device need to be or a list of devices known to work with the new DeDRM.
Both would be better. I have stopped buying Kindle Books except to conclude a series I've been reading. |

All eink Kindles work with deDRM if you mean using Download & Transfer (not available for loans and Kindle Unlimited books, only purchases).

The K1, K2, DX and DXG are best avoided because Download & Transfer will only be mobi, which is very limited.
The later old ones may need updated for azw3. See https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...MQC26VQQMM8XSW A registered updated (3.4.3) and synced at least once since K3 /Keyboard 3 model does allow azw3 on "Download and Transfer". Originally it didn't do azw3/KF8. The azw3/KF8 is similar to epub2. The Mobi format was obsolete even before the first Kindle in 2007. You might need to replace a battery to get an old kindle to go long enough to update/register. Also registration for older Kindles needs you to give your Amazon account a phone number for SMS and then you get a code. Though email may be possible. The Kindle itself isn't used. You register it, copy & paste the serial ID off your Amazon web account into the deDRM plugin. Then the Kindle can live in a drawer for ever. You download ebooks from Content & Devices on your Amazon web account on a Mac/Windows/Linux (though iOS and Android browsers can work, but you need then to copy the file to the Mac/Windows/Linux computer running Calibre). |

Also, this process doesn't work with Fire tablets, even though early models carried Kindle branding.

Although they take more effort to set up there are several workable methods of obtaining Kindle books compatible with DRM removal that do not require the purchase of a Kindle device. See the threads DRM workaround: Kindle for Android and Dealing with Kindle for PC/Mac 1.19 (and later) and KFX in calibre for some examples.

The DeDRM doesn't work on the actual Kindles. You register that kindle to the Amazon account. Then any files downloaded by browser (rather than Whispernet) for later USB transfer to the Kindle can be read.
So yes, if that Kindle isn't "blacklisted" (blocked by Amazon because reported lost or stolen) it can be registered to your account. Then you put that device's Serial ID in the Calibre plug in and downloaded files (direct to PC/Mac etc, not by Kindle) are read. |
