Meebook seems to have taken over some of Boyue's assets.

Boyue are long gone now.

I bought mine to use with the local library, but it's now pointless as that doesn't work, even though it works on an Android 7.0 phone and an 8.1 ancient LCD budget tablet, an RCA Juno 10.

I use a TCL Nxtpaper 11 (Android 13) for the local library now. A Kobo Sage eink for bought & PD novels.

Well thanks for this suggestion, it looks great. I'm just looking for something with a large screen. Looks like readers are still making progress.

The Alita has the bigger screen and it does the job of e-reader OK. If you are realistic about what these things can do and are able to resist constantly tinkering maybe look for a second hand model. My iPad with the screen set to white print on a black background is something that I'd have experimented with had I been better informed a couple of years ago. Progress in this field remains inexplicably slow.

Hmm after having a look I think the Nxtpaper isn't quite what I want. These simple 10 inch devices cost as much as a basic laptop, I'll start looking if a used Alita or P10 won't come up somewhere.
