March 2024 update: Readouts is no more

Received an update on my GlowLight Plus and the update was that they removed Readouts.

The text states: “What's new in version 8.1.7.31(E) / 6.6.5.9:
Every good story must come to an end. As of March 2024, Readouts has closed its covers, and will no longer be available.
Much like your To Read list, we have a list of great things we’re working on for the future.”

I always thought the monthly Readouts could have been a great way to inspire a book club kind of social thing for B&N? But I never liked any of the selections.

Readouts has been replaced with “Search” in the bottom navigation.

I wonder if this is related to a new potential eBook subscription called NOOK Unlimited? It was mentioned in a posting that was published by Lenovo for the upcoming May 2024 NOOK Lenovo Tablet (=Lenovo Tab M9, 4GB RAM/64GB Storage). Link: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/glossary/nook/

It seems that's not the only thing they changed. They also messed around with the Android Development Settings and put a password lock on it. Disappointing. Off to sell on eBay I go...Can't wait for new Kobos to hit.

I've owned Nooks since 2012 and I've never used (or even heard of, that I recall) Readouts. I went searching to see what it is (was?) and it looks to be a collection of blogs and excerpts. I didn't even know B&N had a blog. I'm a terrible Nook customer.

Yes, there's a password lock on Development Settings. However, you can bypass that by installing an alternate launcher (which you would need anyway if you install any apps, so that you can find them). Go to that launcher, find Settings, and you can access Android Development Settings without being nagged for a password!

Thanks for that!
I have already installed my apps and launchers so I could get to them from the installed launcher, as you state. However, if one didn't already have a launcher installed and bought one of these new, how would they be able to turn on debugging? If I recall correctly, I had to do that to get my Terminal (Mac OS) to see it when running adb device. I am sure skilled people have no issues.

Anyway, I am not buying anymore Nooks or Kindles. I am enjoying customizing my Kobo with tweaks I see online. The next challenge is getting DeepL for translation up and running.

Readouts was more than just blogs or book excerpts. You could read a whole book every month for free. What they did was release only several chapters every week. In all that time though, I only found 1 book that I actually really liked and couldn't wait to read the next chapters.

Yes, I kept hoping that "Serial Reads" would get some interesting books, but I never did find one that held my interest enough to finish.
