A real ebook doesn't have headers and footers or page numbers from a document like a PDF has. There is no sensible way know what size the page is (and absolutely not in advance), so headers and footers inherently don't work.
In theory ebooks could have been designed to support this, but mobi/ azw/KF7, azw3/KF8, KFX, LRF, PDB, OEBPS, epub2 etc don't support it. PDF does, but it's electronic, not an ebook. The epub3 fixed layout might, as would Kindle Print Replica, but those also are not true ebook schemes as fixed size page thus a large tablet or laptop or monitor is needed. They are schemes to replicate PDF. One of the Kindle Print replica formats is actually PDF in an Amazon DRM wrapper |

Plus, This becomes the purview of the READING APP, as only it knows the current place in the document and screen size.
Calibre's Viewer has Preference settings for this, but many others DO NOT Still, something in the book would need to be identifiable (Calibre uses TOC chapter headings, calculates page of based upon current sizes) |

In Firefox etc, go Print Preview. You now have a paginated website with headers, footers and page numbers. Why has no-one done a Codex Plugin that does this using current window size as "virtual printer page", and for extra points make it interactive? Oddly the Kindle DXG web browser does this, which is nice, but the problem is that otherwise it was junk, partly because eink, partly because it was poor. Now totally useless. Yet you have sites like BBC news, that should know better, that auto chain all the previous articles on topic into one forever scroll. I can't see a way to disable it. Disabling scripts totally breaks 1st article content. How did we get here? |
