Companies have been doing such misnomers for quite a while now. My guess is it's some marketing person's "brilliant" idea, with the hope being it'll trick more people into signing up for the plan with ads instead of upgrading to the less-ads plan. They probably bring in more money per user with the ads + subscription cost combined.
