Pain, Barry: In a Canadian Canoe and Other Stories. v1. 11 Nov 2022

Barry Eric Odell Pain (28 Sep. 1864 – 05 May 1928) was an English journalist, poet, humorist and writer. During his lifetime, he was perhaps best known as a writer of parody and lightly humorous stories, but now is also noted for his tales touched with fantasy, horror, and the supernatural. He also wrote stories of mystery and suspense. His humor has been characterized by some modern critics as “a surreal forerunner to Monty Python.”

==============
Presented here, another collection of Barry Pain’s early short stories.

Two story sequences, “In a Canadian Canoe” and “The Nine Muses Minus One”, have occasional touches of the fantastic.
In “The Celestial Grocery”, a fantasy in the mode of F. Anstey, a shop sells abstract concepts rather than material goods — for example, ‘Requited Love’, ‘Political Success’, and ‘Personal Charm’.
“The Girl and the Beetle” is a moral fable and satire on Victorian attitudes toward death.
