Filippo De Filippi was an Italian medical doctor, scientist, mountaineer and explorer. He was the expedition doctor and is the author of the book. Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi was an Italian mountaineer and explorer. In 1909 he aimed to climb K2 in Karakoram. There, the expedition he led explored the second highest mountain on earth, K2, from three sides and reached a height of 6250 m on the east ridge. The first climbers of K2 reached the summit in 1954 via the east ridge, now known as the Abruzzi Spur and named after Luigi Amedeo. Today the route is considered as standard route. In an attempt on Chogolisa, the expedition reached almost 7500 m, an altitude record for that time. They had to turn around just 150 m below the summit because of bad weather.
