Sending negative feedback -- even if it's done with the best of intentions, and is politely and constructively phrased -- directly to an author can be very unkind. I've seen even very successful authors writing about struggling with impostor syndrome and low self confidence, and how reading reviews (even mostly positive ones) can be hugely stressful at times, so it's something they need to be in the right mood for.
I tend to agree. If an author wants your opinion directly, he or she will enlist you as a beta reader or something. In general, that sort of feedback is what an author goes to author workshops for (it's also why most authors need editors).

As a software writer, I liked feedback when I showed the prototype. I got a bit grumpy when the customer didn't respond to the prototype, but complained after the software was in production.
