Amazon, random $5 credit based on previous purchase?
Last night I got an email from Amazon titled: "Here's a $5 credit toward titles by Leo Tolstoy"
The body of the message says it is based on my purchase of the Signet Classics edition of War and Peace. The credit is very limited. The three books it will apply to are: War and Peace: Translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (Vintage Classics) MSRP $14.99, War and Peace (Modern Library Classics) MSRP $14.99 and Anna Karenina (Modern Library Classics) MSRP $11.99. The selection is too limited. Two out of three are alternate translations of the book that sparked the credit. I likely won't purchase any of them. But I am wondering if anyone else had strange credit offers from Amazon pop-up like that? |

I had one today for "book by author", but it turned out to actually only be for a single book by them, not any book, which is that I think what implied by the email.

(Depending on the author, book and amount of the credit of course) I likely would have been suckered by such an email.

I got the email today based on purchase of Stranger in a Strange Land. Two books were offered. Both were from Penguin just like SIASL.

Yep, I got one too. Don't remember who the author was, now, but it was for someone who has a long-running historical mystery series.

I lucked out, getting one for a Dorling Kindersley book --- hopefully tomorrow I'll have enough Microsoft Rewards points for another $5 Amazon gift card and can get one then.

I've received coupons like this before for various things, mostly specific titles on comiXology because I've bought a lot of Tsutomu Nihei's stuff. Never cashed them in because lack of interest in the very narrow selection.

I spent some time checking out Penguin books, and most of what I saw offer the $5.00 rebate, but it’s in very, very fine print found just above the line above “Editorial Reviews”. When you click on “Learn more” you’ll find the details. I didn’t get an e-mail, but the fine print says it’s a limited time by invitation only. I didn’t get the e-mail, so it doesn’t work for me, but if you did get it, there are plenty of books to choose from.

I got the email after buying a Lee Child book. The offer was only valid on 6-7 books *earlier* in the series than the one I bought. Come on, Amazon, I already bought those books, and you know that. I trashed the email.

My husband got the offer while looking through some Kindle books. He was in his account, which we don't use for buying Kindle books. He used it to buy the book he wanted as a gift for me, so I accepted the gift it on my account, but that still allowed him to use the $5 off.
I think it showed up as a coupon on the book's product page. |

I got a similar offer after purchasing a JD Robb book - but the only books eligible are her compilations ($35!!). Even $5 off doesn't bring them into my book buying range.

I wonder if the lack of usage (or perhaps these comments here) will tell Amazon we think this is a mostly useless offer. It's only good for someone encountering a new author, not for people who have already been buying books!
