Hey sleuth-hounds -- How about V. S. Vernon Jones?
And another submission for your kind consideration:
Vernon Stanley Vernon Jones --- Translator Aesop's Fables, published 1912 (illustrated by Rackham). This seems to be the only thing he ever had published, and once again, absolutely no biographical data to be found. Anybody???? |

Could it be this one (born 1875)? https://oxfordindex.oup.com/view/10....84.013.U244007 I can't see the full entry, though. "Some" info: https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...9-8105ea9e0c78

Hi Jellby --- well, the data you found is very likely the same person.
If he was born in 1875, it is probably NOT safe to assume he falls under Life+70. Durn it! I wanted to do the Rackham book as it stands, but maybe I will use the text from a "safe" translation. The illustrations are very nice, and deserve as much audience as possible. Thank you for finding the info! Why didn't that show up in my google hits? Why does it seem like you folks in Europe have better luck with searching? |

Given Jellbys info, this is probably the man:
https://books.google.dk/books?id=KDn...5-1955&f=false https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/.../1411/data.pdf (about halfway down the page, giving full name, and the exact death date as December 4. 1955.) Regards, Kim |

Thank you, Kim --- that seems to verify the situation.
Ah, well. Now I am trawling through other translations, and currently trying to decide between that of George Fyler Townsend (the "traditional" English edition 1882), and Joseph Jacobs (retold 1894 and later). Currently leaning toward the latter, but need to compare some more. Guys, thank you for your help (even if the outcome was not a welcome one). |
