iriver Cover Story - volume icon won't go away

Hi, I'm hoping that somebody here can help me with this issue. I have an iriver Cover Story that I've been using for about 18 months. Recently, when I'm reading the volume icon appears - I press the back button to make it go away, but it keeps coming back. This has now got to the point where I can't actually use the device to read as there is a volume icon constantly on the screen. Does anybody here have any idea how I can fix this problem please.
