The story that caused Stephen King to become a horror writer

In 1958, Charles Starkweather went on a murder spree that left 11 people dead. When it was over, his 14-year-old ex-girlfriend was found with him. The question became whether she was his accomplice or his captive. Her defense team believed so firmly in her innocence that they fought for 18 years without pay to get her released from prison.

Pro Bono - The 18-Year Defense of Caril Ann Fugate is about this story. It follows it all the way from the murders to the conclusion, and on through the various movies, book, and songs it inspired, such as Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska album, Peter Jackson's The Frighteners, Terrence Malick's Badlands, and Stephen King's entire career.
