HRF Keating (1926-2011) - Inspector Ganesh Ghote
HRF Keating died in London last week of cardiac arrest at age 84. A prolific author, particularly of crime novels, he will best be remember for some 20 titles featuring the Bombay detective, Inspector Ghote. Making his debut in The Perfect Murder in 1964, Keating crafted an unassuming, but always successful, character who eventually made it to the movies.
There are appreciations of Keating in The Guardian, The Independent and the New York Times, among other places. Keating's website has been celebrating the ebook and pbook reissue of his well loved series which ironically launches on Thursday. Amazon customers may pre-order here. Keating won the Crime Writer's Association Gold Dagger for this first outing, and many awards after. He was also a regular contributor to The Times of London, reviewing crime fiction for 25 years in 30 words or less .... I had been looking forward to enjoying these as they re-appeared, knowing the author was enjoying the celebrity within his lifetime. Alas. |

I am pleased to say that four novels in the Inspector Ganesh Ghote series, which were already slated for release in May, are now available from Penguin at both Amazon in Kindle format and Kobobooks in ePub format. (The Kobo editions, in Canada anyway, are slightly cheaper AND there is an additional 20% discount available this weekend.)
The Perfect Murder, pub. 1964 - Amazon Kindle $9.71 Kobo EPub $8.49 Inspector Ghote Breaks an Egg, pub. 1970 - Amazon Kindle $7.55 Inspector Ghote Trusts the Heart, pub. 1972 - Amazon Kindle $9.71 Kobo EPub $8.49 Under a Monsoon Cloud, pub. 1986 - Amazon Kindle $9.71 Kobo EPub $8.49 |

Perhaps the May release then is still on ... originally I saw a date of May 24. These have been released in the UK and Canada, then.

Well, I have to say The Perfect Murder is delightful. We follow the investigation of Inspector Ghote, local CID, as he attempts to track down the killer of "Mr Perfect", secretary to a local business tycoon, in parallel with the uncovering of the thief of a single Rupee from the desk of the Minister of Police and the Arts. Remarkably, we discover very early on that Mr Perfect isn't actually dead ... and hence "the Perfect murder" isn't a murder case ... but somehow the missing Rupee and the non-fatal attack on the secretary are linked.
It's a very entertaining read and well worth the cost of entry. The Penguin formatting on the Kindle is first-rate ... other than a missing table of contents. |

Unfortunately the ebooks do not appear to be available in the USA. This doesn't seem fair. I haven't even had a chance to read him yet...

If it's any consolation, the Kobo Canada price has mysteriously risen althought Kindle price remains the same as above.

But I can't even get them in audio, I don't think. Not real familiar with audio so that will be worth checking out.
