"Amazon.com customers now purchase more Kindle books than hardcover books"
That's simply amazing. I didn't think ebooks would overtake hardbacks for a while. I'm assuming they still have a long way to go before ebooks approach paperback sales though. |

80% of Patterson's ebook sales are through Kindle?
That does suggest that they *do* hold 80% of the mainstream ebook market. I notice they don't give absolute numbers for Kindle reader sales... They must be getting most of their volume from the reader apps. |

I can attest to this. The sales numbers are amazing. As an author, my best title alone sold 40 copies yesterday (MECH). When listed with the bestsellers in all SF books, not just Kindle, I'm right in there at about the same slot level as any bestseller in print. I mean that being #4 in SF adventure = #5 in all SF adventure. Logically, the Kindle books are selling faster as the print books.
Also, I've worked out with a spreadsheet that they must be selling about 100k ebook titles a day. Or more. The top 100 books are selling 200+ copies a day. A few months ago, the news was in 2009 they were selling about 10k a day. That is a 1000% growth in titles sold. -BVL |

That's great. I hope these type of numbers lead to more backlist books being digitized.

Awesome post! It's always great to hear how successful eBooks are becoming. And even if this is a win for Amazon, it's a win for eBook enthusiasts as statistics like these will continue to erode resistance to ebooks.
We should all recognize the marketing genius of amazon.....( sorry I couldn't keep a straight face). Anyhow we should all thank B&N for forcing the hand of Amazon. Quote:

The age of ebooks is coming! Gutenberg did the first revolution and made books accessible, we are living in the second book revolution. Let the people read!
I would just like to know how many ebooks would Amazon sell if they were DRM-free and for multiple devices. Their numbers would increase exponentially. Last edited by mikij; 07-19-2010 at 06:12 PM. |

I wonder of this is more about "Amazon can sell stuff" than it is about "ebooks are taking off". I'd like to think it's the latter but I suspect there is no straightforward read-across from what Amazon's doing to what is happening in the rest of the ebook market.

I think it is good news on several fronts. As a reader more sales will hopefully lead to more content. Not that there isn't plenty to read (I could never get through everything) but there are books I'd like to see that still aren't available. As a writer it is a very exciting time to be putting out more books through Amazon, but also I've noticed more Smashwords sales too so I think the growth isn't just in Amazon's Kindle market.

When I first started buying e-books I actually bought most of them at Fictionwise, though, and paid through Paypal. Then the crazy crash happened and they lost so much ground that I just gave up on them and have gone over to Amazon. Although I don't have a Kindle yet (it's on the way to me even as we speak!), I've been ordering from Amazon for a while now using the Kindle4PC app. I read them, however, on any or all of my readers thanks to my friend Google. :-) |

No, it's much more than "ebooks are coming of age". That's the story the American Booksellers Association tells when it talks about growth rates of ebooks generally.
Amazon's achievement is impressive, whichever way you swing the cat. It is Kindle books, the so called “closed” standard vs every other vendor, many with a supposed “open” standard of DRM ePub. Yet best selling author James Patterson has sold 867,881 Kindle books and just 272,119 in ALL other formats combined. And the Kindle book share is growing. Compared to both May sales and year-to-date sales ending May, Kindle grew faster than the market — this in spite of the onslaught of Nooks, iPads and Kobos which, even combined, lost ground. Amazon also noted its sales of Kindle books exceeded hardcover books very significantly, in a trend that is growing the gap. Importantly, Amazon’s calculation excludes free books. Amazon is setting the stage: it reports Q2 2010 earnings / performance results on Thu July 22. |
