meh. Thats a ground ball.
consider any modern device for a moment, and software is what makes that device useful. Or not useful in many cases. The good news is that in most cases, and with a bit of sweat, users can improve or replace bad software. |

Make a device run Calibre, sell DRM-free ebooks, and you'll have the absolute winner.
But I bet nobody will. ;-) |

Hardware don't do everything, software don't do everything either.

This is the reason why a tablet with Win7 will be the win. You can read any format you want, and install whatever programs you want.

Or linux, or android, or mac
The only reasson I would want win7 on a tablet is because i would like to run some lego software on it. Else, linux would be my choice. |

I expect all devices in the future to be able to read the same standard formats... that's easy. But the issue is much more than just which formats the device reads... it's in how they are presented.
A recent TeleRead thread discussed preferences between spaces and indents between paragraphs. Here, we've discussed issues like display margins and contrast issues regularly. The winning devices will be those that allow the user to set their display options they way they like them, to optimize their reading experience. Software flexibility... that's what will win consumers over. |
