Firmware update for PRS-500 available - EPUB!
Alas, it's not updateable by user and the device must be sent in.

Do you know if the 500 will still be able to read BBeB after the firmware update?

I don't see why not.
BTW, they also give a more precise date for the switchover. Quote:

I would guess that this offer will only be available in the US, given that the PRS-500 was never officially sold elsewhere.

I suspect that they'll basically replace the guts with something similar to the 300/505. It would be interesting to see some teardown pics from somebody who takes this upgrade path. Still, good news for those who still have 500s.

Yes, I suspect you're right - this will be a hardware update.

My guess is that at the very least, Sony will be replacing the rom inside the 500 so itis large enough to allow the ePub firmware.

And I'm betting it will be software only
They probably just need to do some repartitioning of the flash which might be tricky to do with the existing updater. Last edited by igorsk; 11-15-2009 at 09:21 AM. |

So once your 500 is flashed and you have it back, are you going to open it to see what's maybe changed?

Well, I haven't yet decided whether to send it, since they offer shipping only inside USA...

If you want to send it here with pre-paid postage back to you, I can send it in for you no problem. That is if Sony will allow multiple 500s to be sent in from the same address.

wow !! this is great news !!! and i have to say, i am REALLY impressed that sony is offering this solution. nicely done, sony ! i'll be really interested to hear whether the update is software only or hardware ; i was under the impression the 500 hardware wasn't able to render epub for material reasons. but, if igorsk says those can be fixed by re-partitioning the flash, then that would explain it.

Good service for such an old product, especially since it such a hassle for the company. Thumbs up for this Sony.

Wow, that's going to a deal of trouble on Sony's part. I don't think I've ever heard of a company doing this for its customers. Usually outmoded electronics are simply left unsupported.
Good move, Sony. |
