Handheld sales continue to drop, says IDC
While it has been quiet among the omniscient market gurus, they now strike back with their gloomy news around the handheld industry. IDC is claiming that sales of handheld devices continue to drop for a seventh consecutive quarter, with total shipments falling 16.9% year on year in Q3 2005.
#1: Palm, with a 22.7% decline year on year. #2: HP with sales decreasing by 35.4% year on year. #3: Acer with sales growing 421% year on year. #4: Dell with a 13.9% decline year on year. As always it's important to read the small print behind these numbers. For IDC, handheld devices do not include telephony but may include wireless capabilities that enable Internet access and text communication. In another words, the Palm Treo is not a handheld. Meanwhile, research firm Canalys sees global shipments of smart mobile devices surging up 75% year on year, with handheld shipments falling 18%, and converged devices more than double in volume. I am not surprised. They should aim at making them cheaper rather than add new features very few will pay for. The new hp-rx1950 is a step in the right direction but should be even cheaper from the start.

Well, there's also the fact that almost everyone who wants/needs a handheld probably already has one. And face it - has there really been anything worth upgrading to recently? The TX is promising, but it's only been out less-than-a-month, not enough time for it's sales to (possibly) bring up Palm's handheld sales.
And the PPC side of things? They get a bit faster, a bit more memory, but they still have basically the same feature-set as they did a year, possibly two years ago. Where's the upgrade motivation? Face it - innovation is starting to wear thin across the board... |

And somehow they need to find a way to simplify the core tasks like Blackberry or Hipster. When you go past basic PIMs, it's too much like setting up and maintaining a regular computer -- not great for the general public, even if we like it.
