Jacobsen, J. P.: Niels Lyhne [Danish] v1. 22 Jan 2024

Jens Peter Jacobsen (7. april 1847 i Thisted – 30. april 1885 sst.) var en dansk forfatter, digter og oversætter.

Efter at have taget realeksamen ved Thisted Realskole rejste han til København, hvor han tog studentereksamen og studerede naturhistorie ved Københavns Universitet. I begyndelsen af 1870'erne oversatte og udgav han Darwins Origin of Species til dansk. Under en rejse i Italien i sommeren 1873 fik han en blodstyrtning og lægerne konstaterede, at han led af fremskreden tuberkulose – en sygdom, som dengang var uhelbredelig. Hans reaktion var at ile hjem til Danmark og bosætte sig i barndomshjemmet i Thisted, hvor han bl.a. skrev sine to skønlitterære hovedværker, Fru Marie Grubbe fra 1876 og Niels Lyhne fra 1880.

J. P. Jacobsen er trods sin beskedne produktion – 2 romaner, 7 noveller og en del poesi, hvoraf størstedelen først udkom efter hans død – en af de danske forfattere, som har inspireret mange forfattere og komponister, fortrinsvis i udlandet, herunder bl.a. Rainer Maria Rilke, Thomas Mann og Hugo von Hoffmannsthal. Englænderen Frederick Delius baserede sin opera Fennimore and Gerda på Jacobsens Niels Lyhne, og Arnold Schönberg brugte digtcyklussen Gurresange til sin monumentale dramatiske kantate Gurrelieder.
