All the stories in this small volume were first published in The Bulletin, an Australian weekly news, politics and literary magazine. It does not ever seem to have been reprinted. The author, Ernest Favenc, was English born, but came to Australia in the late 1860s as a teenager; after a year working in a city office, he found more challenging work on a station in North Queensland. He later led explroing parties into unexplored regions of Queensland and Western Australia, later retiring to the city and working as a journalist and story writer. He wrote some 300 short stories. Three collections were published in his lifetime, using about 50 or so of them. This is a very rare book indeed.
