Harold Mercer (1882-1952) was primarily a short story writer, publishing more than one hundred. This is his only novel, on the theme of a legendary civilisation of Amazons on a south seas island, descended mainly from 17th and 18th century pirates and the women they kidnapped. A group of modern-day adventurers find the island, and the legend is true: women are the rulers, dominate the men, and are the warrior caste as well. There is a cataclysmic climax as the adventurers struggle to escape while the island's volcano bursts into life again. Originally published by Bookstall NSW in 1933, this edition is taken from the serial published in weekly parts in "The Land", a NSW weekly farmer orientated newspaper.
