DataGuy at Digital Book World 2016:
Author Earnings' DataGuy was a keynote presenter at one of Digital Book World's conferences this week.
Publishing Perspectives has a report: http://publishingperspectives.com/20.../#.VuGTfZXSmUk More interesting, and more useful, the entire presentation can be viewed online and downloaded at Author Earnings: http://authorearnings.com/2016-digit...-presentation/ Of special interest to readers, on page 9, there is a breakdown of ebook sales (in currency terms) by source for the major genres. Romance, most notably, half the money spent by readers goes to Indies. SF&F is almost hslf Indie and children's ebooks about a third. (Do note that AE breaks down Indies into "clearly selfpub" and "almost certainly self-pub" Indies, aka, single author uncategorized publishers). Litfic, in contrast, is almost non-existent. Pricing considerstions bring as they are Indie Unit share is going to be higher than their dolkar share. So we can comfortably say Indies dominate romance and SF&F ebook sales in both revenue and units sold. Another interesting chart, in light of repeated claims in the media, is that the higher BPH ebook prices depressing their ebook sales have not cannibalized Kindle ebook sales although Amazon's pbook sales *have* gone up. Chart 42 presents the numbers. Lots of other interesting numbers and charts. (Success of newcomer authors via Indie and Tradpub channels, for example.) There is also a clear, grade-school level explanation of the AE spider methodology. Worth downloading. Or at least checking the online pics. Food for thought. Data Guy
An amazing amount of information for the Big 5 publishers to ignore. They may think they have a long term strategy...but they may loose so much market share and authors in months that they may have real challenges to right the ship...print or ebooks.
