Gilman, Charlotte Perkins: What Diantha Did. v1, 26 Jan 2015
Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) was mostly self-educated, and became a leading intellectual in the women's movement. She began a career as a public lecturer in 1890, wrote many poems, articles, short stories, and novels, and between 1909 and 1916 wrote, edited, and published The Forerunner, a monthly magazine. Her most famous book is The Yellow Wallpaper, (1892) written after a bout of post-partum depression. She was didactic in all her writings - 'In my opinion it is a pretty poor thing to write, to talk, without a purpose' - often with sardonic humour and always with compassion.
What Diantha Did was serialised in The Forerunner from November 1909 to October 1910, and published separately in 1910. The main themes are 'The servant question' and the grief caused by having to do work in which one is not interested; set against a background of future female in-laws who would be ashamed to earn their own living and a fiancé who believes that 'No man - that is a man - would marry a woman and let her run a business.' The text source was Project Gutenberg 3016-h.htm, checked against a pdf version of the 1910 Charlton Company edition. Perhaps because of Ms Gilma's prodigous output and lack of a proofreader there were several typos and inconsistencies. I have silently corrected inconsistencies and typos, curled quotes, set letters and documents off as blockquotes, made names consistent, and checked spelling and hyphenation with Oxforddictionaries.com US.
