calibre hangs while executing View

Lately after I convert a book (from zip to MOBI) and then click on View, the spinning "please wait" symbol appears for a loooong time, followed by this alert:

The script on this page appears to have a problem. Do you want to stop the script?

If I click Yes, my book appears.

This didn't use to happen. What can I do to make this stop happening?

This may or may not matter, but how powerful of a computer do have? Did you run calibre in debug mode?

When opening a .mobi ebook in the calibre viewer, calibre must perform an on-the-fly conversion to EPUB in order to open it. That may slow things down and do other weird things.

Convert the book to EPUB, and then open that in the viewer.

It does? That explains why one of my books never opens.. Or converts

@asqueue - If you think this is changed behaviour I suggest you verify using an earlier version of calibre

The fact that you're using 32bit could be the problem - conversions (as someone already said viewing a MOBI does an under-the-hood conversion) is one of the few features of calibre that materially benefits from 64bit and more memory. I don't think throwing more memory onto your computer would help unless you upgrade to 64 bit windows and calibre.

Anyway, converting to EPUB did stop the hanging.

Now I see:

Authors: [Me]
Formats: EPUB, MOBI, ORIGINAL_MOBI, ZIP
Path: Click to open

When I select MOBI or ORIGINAL_MOBI, it hangs. When I select EPUB, it doesn't.

And now something new is happening. While navigating through the book if I go to the cover page and then attempt to go to the next page, it hangs and for just as long.

Viewing my book worked just fine for two weeks. (it used to hang for a few seconds, but not for upwards of 5 minutes.) Why should the lengthy hanging suddenly have started two days ago?

@asqueue - What version of calibre are you running and is this a big book - eg bible or complete works of 20 Prolific Writers ?

Did this start to happen since you upgraded calibre or something

Calibre 1.36. My book is moderately large. It's a dictionary with thousands of cross-references. Starting in FrameMaker it's 511 pages. I don't know how many ebook pages that would be.

As it happens, I did update calibre on May 9. I can't remember if the trouble started then. I'll try reverting to calibre 1.35 and report back.

Reverting to 1.35 did not fix the problem. So I might as well now update to 1.37. Is my problem a bug? Should it be reported?

And the problem persists in 1.37.

Also, I neglected to say that whenever I go to the cover and then attempt to advance forward, calibre again hangs for that same long time.

asqueue - dictionaries (and bibles) can be problematic - do a search on this subforum for 'dictionar',

if you report it as a bug try to give as much info as possible - see https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=186697

By "subforum" do you mean MobileRead Forums > E-Book Software > Calibre > Conversion? That search produced only this thread. Or did you mean "dictionary" (with a "Y)? No matter; that search had the same result. Searching MobileRead Forums > E-Book Software > Calibre for "dictionar" produced nothing. For "dictionary" produced" 232 results. That's too many to read.

Guess I'll have to take your word that dictionaries cause problems. At least I can readily view my book by converting to EPUB.

@asqueue - I cant recall the details as I never had the problem, and I've also been known to misremember things. Also I forgot this board can't search on sub-strings, and yes I did mean MobileRead Forums > E-Book Software > Calibre > Conversion.

The 'under-the-covers' conversion that happens when you view anything other than an EPUB probably uses 'suboptimal best guess' settings - which would not be those you used when you did a regular conversion. If you've been able to do a regular conversion, then I suspect you don't have the 'dictionaries can be problematic' situation.

If you want to report it as a 'bug' then report the 'bug' here -->> https://bugs.launchpad.net/calibre. If the dictionary is under copyright and you attach it then mark the post 'private'.
