Gill, Eric: An Essay on Typography. v1. 17 Feb 2013

This is Gill's take not just on typography but on the conflict between industrialisation and craftwork. It is here as a PDF because it was set in a type that Gill designed himself (Joanna), and which was first used in this book: in addition there are numerous illustrations of good and (mostly) bad typography.

It contains also some (possibly contentious) history of letter-styles, of type and of fonts.

In the text Gill made extensive use of abbreviations, and of the ampersand, and marked his paragraph breaks only with pilcrows rather than by indenting or leaving a blank line. He also suggests that fully-justified text is unnecessary, and the book is an example of that belief. This text is taken from the second edition: the first edition achieved roughly equal line-lengths by having words, or parts of words, in a smaller font at the end of the line: the second used more conventional methods.

The second edition also contained (and it is reproduced in this copy) an extra, final, chapter that was (and still is) absolutely batty.
