New Kobo Glo/Mini preview on Engadget
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/h...readers-video/
Not much more info but includes clearer images and footage of the new Kobos than we have seen previously. Looks nice. |

Reasonable update. I will hold on until better reviews come around. The screen on the Glo looked kind of yellowish compared to the Mini, so hopefully a better camera would show exactly what it is like.
In terms of offering, price, and hardware it seems Kobo is making some smart decisions. |

She said backlit
It's a shame she didn't switch off the Glo light to be able to properly compare it with the mini's screen. Glad to know about the back-softness though Thanks for posting the link to the review! |

When she dialed the light all the way back it looked like the standard pearl screen which apparently it is. As with the new Kindle the apparent increased contrast is due to the light.

Yes it is the same... but it does have a higher resolution than the Touch. And of course it has an extra layer of *something or other* over the screen for the light diffusion. That's why I was wanting to compare it with the mini (no extra *something or other*, and relatively the same resolution as the mini has (less pixels but) a smaller screen).

The mini has Vizplex screen which has worse contrast than the Pearl, so the Glo should be better than the mini even without the light on. AFAIK the Kobo Wifi had Vizplex screen.

Visplex is e-ink's trademarked name for the overall technology. Pearl is the latest version of the Visplex technology, and is used on the Mini as well as the Glo. Resolution of both is around 210ppi. Shameer has verified this in another thread. Last edited by EldRick; 09-20-2012 at 06:21 PM. |

Pretty decent review. I notice that although the used backlighting down below, they properly referred to it as frontlighting in the first couple of paragraphs.

My bad, thanks for clarifying this. (It still bugs me that why they refer the mini screen simply as "vizplex" if it's a second generation one, better known as "pearl"?)

EDIT: It looks like they've redone their site and now are calling it Pearl again , it would be nice if they'd pick one. Last edited by AnemicOak; 09-20-2012 at 01:28 PM. |

I found it on the eink.com website:
The kobo's website at minis tech specs says it has "E Ink Vizplex V110". Seems NOT a Pearl to me. |

It's very confused, but the e-ink web site says the Mini uses a Pearl:
http://www.eink.com/customer_showcase_kobo_mini.html Some marketing guys somewhere don't seem to be doing their jobs very well... Last edited by EldRick; 09-20-2012 at 02:29 PM. |

The article says "the resolution is 1,024 x 758 (yes, 758)." Is that really true? If not, somebody might wanna let Engadget know, because they even repeated it for emphasis like they were sure of it.
Kobo's site says 1024x768... |

It's a bit confusing as we can see, but the bottom line is there are more pixels on the page leading to crisper and sharper text. That in combination with all of our other Glo features: ComfortLight, TypeGenius and hand-tuned fonts, makes this the best eReader experience in the world in our opinion. But don't take my word for it |
