Dickens, Charles: A Tale of Two Cities (Illustrated). v5. 17th Oct 2009
Dickens' great historical novel of the French Revolution.
Set between 1757 and 1793, A Tale of Two Cities views the causes and effects of the Revolution from an essentially private point of view, showing how private experience relates to public history. Dickens' characters are fictional, and their political activity is minimal, yet all are drawn towards the Paris of the Terror, and all become caught up in its web of human suffering and human sacrifice. Dickens described this book as "the best story I have written". Fully illustrated with the original black and white illustrations by Phiz. Enjoy! EDIT: 22 Mar 08 Recreated the book to correct a problem with paragraph breaks. Uploaded v3. EDIT: 3 Sep 09 Thoroughly proof-read the book against the "Oxford Illustrated Dickens" edition. Corrected about 200 errors, restored missing accents, and fixed up the formatting. As a result, the book is now in an excellent state. Please let me know if you find any additional errors in it. Uploaded v4. EDIT: 17 Oct 09 Corrected some minor issues with the HTML code of the book. This does not make any visible change to the previous v4, and there is no need to re-download if you have that version. I just had a quick look at it and its wonderful. What a nice gift to from you to me -- my favorite Dickens just in time for the holidays.
I seldom reread books as there is so much that I have yet to read the first time. Dickens, Conan Doyle, and Gunter Grass are the exceptions. |

I finished reading this in the early hours of this morning, with a box of tissues on hand to mop up the tears
What a brilliant read it was. I've read lots of Dickens, but some reason never this book before, and I'd agree with his comment that it's his best story (of the ones I have read anyway). Thank you, Harry for the upload. |

My pleasure. This isn't my favourite Dickens book, I must admit. For me, that title belongs pretty much jointly to "Great Expectations" and "Bleak House".
