Written in 1975, toward the end of his life, Civilization & Beyond is Nearing's master work. Through it he recasts the entire scope of human civilization and offers solutions for the future. You may not agree with all he has written; however, the book will make you think.

He was for all his life a fire brand. But he was far more than an common variety left winger. He was one of the first in the back to nature movement and taught self-reliance before many had even heard the term. He called it practical living.

Nearing died in 1983 at age 100.
