Whitaker, William: Latin/English Dictionary. v1.1. 26 Feb 2011
Update: (21/4/2013).
This project is quite old, but still useful. You want Whitaker's Words on your Kindle? You have two choices:
Doistu's looks to be the most complete. PoP's has 'popup searches'. Attached is a ZIP file containing the following from the original python project.
Update (22/5/2011): Doitsu has uploaded a reformatted version with some inflections; see post #7. Update (27/2/2011): you may also be interested in an early release of my Lewis and Short Latin dictionary. Update (26/2/2011): the development files are as before, but have compiled dictionary without compression (see post #5 below). You can either download the standalone dictionary below, or everything below. Update (21/4/2013): PoP has recompiled the dictionary with new features; see post #10. Thanks. Glad to see that Latin isn't a dead language...

I agree, to suggest (suggerere) that Latin is dead is ridiculous, (ridiculus) it is fortunate (fortunate) that Latin has transcended (transcendere) fate (fatum) and remains (remanere) applicable (applicare) to even our society (societas).

I have removed the compression on the above generated .mobi file as I think it caused errors searching for certain words around the 'm' area. An updated version of the dictionary is attached.

Plus there is the fact that not only is Latin used in many fields such as Medicine for example but it is the basis of French, Spanish and Italian as well. Which is why words in all three can sometimes seem to be just variations on spelling and pronounciation. The words have a common root.

New version with inflections
I reformatted the dictionary and added the most common inflections.

Hey, that's great Doitsu. Perhaps you'd also upload the script you used for the conversion process.

Since I'm not familiar with XSL, I simply converted the original Whitaker file to a tab delimited file and then used a very simple Visual Basic script to write the .html source file. I didn't post it, because it isn't cross platform and I didn't think anybody would find it useful. If you nevertheless want to have it, I can of course post it and the other source files, too.

What's wrong with *la*?
Quote:
(pretty sure the copyright of my cover has expired) Interestingly, when I set up the language of the book and the input language of the dictionary to latin la(1142) using Java Mobi Metadata editor the pop up doesn't work. It works fine with the (current, but wrong) hebrew he(13). Wonder why? This work is assumed to be in the Life+70 public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution. When I generated the dictionary, I used Mobipocket Creator to generate the dictionary and since Latin wasn't available as the dictionary input language, I simply selected English to keep things simple.
Apparently, only the following language codes are supported by Kindle devices/apps: Spoiler:
Changing the language code to a code originally not supported by Mobipocket Creator usually doesn't work. Also KindleGen seems to evaluate only the first two letters of the language code. I.e. sub-language codes are being ignored. For more information see this recent thread. |
