I am not sure a VM will respond fast enough.
Pick instead a "Linux LiveCD" - that will run your machine native without touching anything on the disk drives (LiveCD run in ram only). You have less than a second after the port is readied to force a character into the serial port to stop the auto-bootstrap process. That requirement has been difficult for some Windows/Hardware combinations to meet (too much, or very strange buffering when dealing with a single character). You really need an experienced Win-10 user to guide you. |

i try doing:

Then there is no password, just press return when prompted. |

@jolunavi: If you've also installed Coward's Rescue Pack make sure that your USB cable isn't plugged into you Kindle when rebooting/exiting diagnostics mode.
