Victoria -- Good luck with this one, especially as it seems to be getting stronger again. Stay safe and take care.

Nova Scotia got hammered. >450K without power and lots of damage caused by water and uprooted trees. However, no reports of loss of life so far, so that's the good news. Nova Scotia Power is saying it could be Wednesday in many areas before power is back on.

Golly, that sounds bad. Let’s hope everyone there stays safe, including Victoria.

Thanks for the good wishes. The storm had a huge footprint, so many people will be without power for several days yet. But thankfully, no loss of life. My power wasn’t supposed to be restored until tonight, but it just snapped on an hour ago. I’d just drained lukewarm tea from my last thermos, so not bad at all. Front-lit ereaders really are a blessing

Yes, welcome back! And yes, eReaders are useful in a power outage.

Just fyi - I bought a little battery pack called ‘Pocket Juice’ before the storm. It’s no bigger than a deck of cards. It recharged both kindles, my phone and watch, and still had more than half it’s power left. So a good investment for power outages.

I listened to the audiobook of This House Is Haunted, an October nominee. I enjoyed it; it didn't have any huge surprises but I liked the writing style and the pacing. I can't say it scared me, but it certainly held my attention.

Early on, it tracks very closely with Ruth Ware's Turn of the Key; of course they both are riffs on The Turn of the Screw. But having read Ware more recently than James, I kept seeing the similarities and wondering if Ware had read This House Is Haunted. The audiobook narrator (Alison Larkin) was excellent. |
