A few things to check.

You are using the rc3 version.
You did unzip that version and read the instructions in the zip.
Your USB stick is formatted FAT32.
There is nothing else on the USB stick.
You have confirmed that update.zip is update.zip and not update.zip.zip
You have tried another USB stick - not all USB sticks are created equal.

After you have checked those and it still does not work, try using an SD card instead of the USB stick.

Webb .. I upgraded mine by putting update.zip and gapps.zip on the root of my sdcard then booting with those 2 keys held down. Truthfully, they weren't the only 2 files on my sdcard, I had a backup of all my apps on there too, though the update files were the only 2 in the root directory of the card.

Perhaps you should try updating from your SDcard instead if you are hafing flash drive problems ????

if no log file is created you forgot to unzip the file and read the instructions inside.

Thanks to the poster who suggested the zip file might be zip.zip - it was! Win 7 is a little greek to me - more experienced with XP and Mac Lion but 7 didn't show the extensions (zip.zip) even in Detail display or List. Everything is working now and I even have Market and got some of my apps downloaded and installed.

Still not sure why my internal storage doesn't show up in Windows Explorer when I tether it with a USB wire?! But I do have a 16 GB micro SD so I shouldn't run out of space any time soon.

I finally got into my Android Market account on my laptop. I decided to try to download the Merriam Webster dictionary, and run it through APKfixer, as I could not install it direcdtly to my PE. I could only get the file as far as the Android library, after that I could not see a way to actually down load the APK file. Any tips? I looked for it on Freewarelovers and SAM, but it's only on the Android Market or the Amazon Market and neither will allow me to download the file...

This fix might not work for apps NOT from Android Market because they're often not signed.

Would this same type of swap work on a PE that no longer has access to Internal memory, as that was closed when all the files went to the SDcard. Could the SDcard be reformated so that there is an extsdcard partition created on the SDcard and then the edits to the two system files could be made? It looks like a great solution...

I have tried a number of the various updates in this and other threads, renamed them to update.zip on my sd card, and have yet to see an update splash screen while I have held down the menu and rotate buttons for very long after sliding the power button. I have used the reset button as suggested, and currently my pocket edge will not boot, and hangs with 3 dots with the text displaying backwards. There does not seem to be any log file on my sd card. Any help would be appreciated.

The text appearing backwards points to the possibility that you might have tried to install the update for the EE rather than the PE. Also, you only have a 50/50 chance of an SD card doing the update.

You will need to get the dingo golden update and copy it to the root of a USB stick and make sure it is named update.zip and NOT update.zip.zip which can happen if you are doing it from windows.

You might have to try a few USB sticks because not all of them are created equal - some work and some don't.

Once you have your PE back to Dingo you can then use the same USB stick to update your PE to Ermine, just replace the Dingo update.zip with the Ermine update.zip.

If the above does not work then you will have to consider the use of the serial cable but we will only get to that if it is needed.

You only need to hold down the Menu and Rotate buttons for approximately 10 seconds upon powering up and then release. Since you have the three dot boot up with reverse text there is a high probability you used a full sized eDGe update for your Pocket eDGe. Like ivanjt said, try restoring the PE with the Dingo OS first. If it works you will need to perform the procedure twice.
