Yep, it's Latin only. A wide range of Latin scripts, but Latin nonetheless

I appreciate all your effort. Thanks, too, for letting me butt in on the developers corner with my dumb questions. I don't know what the board etiquette is, so if I've posted where I shouldn't, you've been very nice about it. |

Could someone please help me figure out why the 2.5.6 update fails to install? I can't understand why the darned thing won't work - I have a K2 US, which I had manually updated to 2.5.2, applied NiJuLe's font and screensaver hacks, received the 2.5.4 update via Whispernet, which installed without a problem, but 2.5.6 continually fails. I went ahead and completely uninstalled the font and screensaver hacks and rebooted, but the update again failed. So I then installed the latest version of the font and screensaver hacks, with same update failure result. I don't get it - should I now try uninstalling the font, ss AND the jailbreak hack?
My K2 Settings page says I'm at version 2.5.4 (501100064). Thanks! |

@kilikini: Check the system logs (;dumpMessages in the search box on the Home screen, they'll end up in the documtns folder) after a failed update. That's pretty weird, since it litteraly only update *two* files, which also would have been patched by the 2.5.4 update...

@ichbindasauge: That... has nothing to do with a failed update, sorry... ^^
@kilikini: That's... weird. Here are the relevant part: Code:

Since I don't really now what this Journal-update thing does (and can't easily take a look at what it does, since it's a part of the java framework, and java + me = fail.), that's pretty much a shot in the dark, sorry. (The somewhat 'good' news seems to be that this doesn't seem to have anything to do with the hacks causing trouble...). To recap: #0: I'm pretty sure the hacks are not the root of the issue. #1: I'd very much like a log of a successful install to have a baseline. #2: Try once more after having switched to debug log level (;debugOn in the search box). #3: Try deleting those 3 books (ASIN #): B001CBBTJM, B001GIPJ2Y, B0011XW1E8 Last edited by NiLuJe; 07-24-2010 at 02:14 AM. |

Okay, I deleted 2 of the books (ironically, both Kindle How-To guides), but was unable to find the other, ASIN# B001CBBTJM. Tried updating, it was unsuccessful once again. Switched to debug log mode, and have attached the most recent update logs.
I, too, feel like the hacks are not the cause of the problem - otherwise, why would the previous update have worked? I don't have to have this 2.5.6 update, but I would like to know a way to prevent it from downloading and trying to install each time I turn on Whispernet and/or sleep mode. |

Unfortunately, either there's no debug logging in the Journal stuff, or the logging level is reset by the updater, so, nothing new in the latest logs. It's even more cryptic without the books in fact... :/
If someone knows what these Journal*.jar are supposed to do, I'm all ears. Basically, the update patches the two files (version tags) fine, then launch the Journal-update, which fails, which then makes the update revert the two patches and fail. :/ Not even sure if we could learn anything with a log of a successful update, but it's worth a shot. (Unfortunately, I don't have a K2 US :/. And don't have logs of my 2.5.3 update). And, no, not sure how to avoid the autoupdate. (Well, leaving Whispernet off ). Or using some of the nasty tricks laying around in some older posts to avoid the todo requests or stuff like that. Or maybe patching version/prettyversion to fake a 2.5.6... It also failed on my second Kindle US. I also tried to uninstall all hacks including the jailbreak but as you said that didn't make any difference. I also emptied the Documents folder completely in case one the books was the problem, but that didn't help either. It seems nobody on this forum has reported successful installation of the update, only those people that got it over wireless. Makes me wonder if the reason is just a corrupt file?? Or was the update somehow personalized to one Kindle?

I don't think that's it, according to the logs, kilikini got it over the air... :/

On a different note: I replaced the fonts in the hack with Arial Unicode from my Windows 7 PC. It's not the prettiest font, but I need Simplified Chinese Characters and German Umlauts (äöü and also ß) and I haven't found any other fonts that include both.
Do you know of any other font like that? |

very cool....you guys got the font hack back and it works great. I love that ya also have the font's mapped to function...I am going to spend the afternoon fine tuning fonts for each screen.
I really like the novelty of the Museo font for menu screens. And might play around with it for reading....maybe even move to a bolder version as the default book font. It's just a fun font though the normal weight is a tad light for my tastes. I also just do not care for the spacing on the categories portion of the contents list. The font used for titles is excellent, I think I changed that back to the "normal" K2i default font last night but I was groggy and, well, one can never be 100% sure I knew what I was moving where. I am not that interested in screen saver hack but after I finish playing aorund with your font hack I might add some of my own photos as screen savers like I had before...we'll see but it's something to fiddle with at a later date for sure. Anyway, it's nice to have categories to learn to use AND my fonts back...along with many, many more fonts too...love that as it was the only thing keeping me form the 2.5.x update...THANKS!! |
