Has 'The Catcher in the Rye' been a Mobileread book club selection? If not, I'd like to nominate it.

I believe that the MobileRead Club requires an ebook version to be available. {please correct me if I'm wrong}. There might well be a problem getting an ebook version of Catcher In The Rye. I was thinking of nominating it myself but I couldn't locate any legal electronic version anywhere--not even in the iTunes book store.

I would personally be quite open to using a PB--which is easily obtainable--and if this can be done {as it is in the Literary Club} I would certainly second the nomination. But I think we need a ruling from the moderator on it {and on whether it has been previously nominated}.

I don't recall that we've ever had a prohibition against books that weren't available in e-book format, but I don't think such a book has a chance of winning.

I'll give a nod for Lady Chatterly's Lover.

Surprised noone's mentioned Harry Potter yet (not a nomination from me )

I'm going to nominate Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.

Thanks for that. I should have posted links, but I was in a rush when I put up my nominations. Here is a list for common sources:

Both ebooks are also available on Overdrive.

I second Ulysses. It looks like this new category is off to an interesting start with the nominations so far.

I think the nominations are getting altogether too literary . I'll nominate the crime noir No Orchids for Miss Blandish by James Hadley Chase. Another book I read as a schoolboy, and one that provoked a great deal of controversy in its time.

Quote:
This novel is now widely regarded as one of the top thrillers of the last century. When it was originally published it pushed the social boundaries of the time through its relentless exploration of crime and sexual exploitation. Unlike most crime novels of that era, the characters are rich, deeply realized portraits of those who lived on the fringes of society during the Great Depression -- namely the gangsters, their women, and the men who hunted them. The novel broke sales records when published and has gone onto to sell over four million copies worldwide. Historically important, such literary greats as George Orwell and Graham Greene instantly recognized its merits. In a lengthy essay that securely placed NO ORCHIDS in an honored position in crime fiction, George Orwell wrote that, "In a book like NO ORCHIDS one is not, as in the old-style crime story, simply escaping from dull reality into an imaginary world of action. One's escape is essentially into cruelty and sexual perversion...a brilliant piece of writing, with hardly a wasted word or a jarring note anywhere."

I'm going to second No Orchids for Miss Blandish. When you've got Greene and Orwell giving it kudos I think it's worth a read.
