I was lucky enough to run into it in my mid-teens (SFBC DEATHWORLD TRILOGY edition). Came in handy during my university encounters with true believers and rabid revolutionaries. Might've saved my life, too.

R.I.P. Harry Harrison
Just been advised by a close friend that another of the great SF authors is no longer with us... Harry Harrison died peacefully a few hours ago. He will be missed but leaves behind a notable body of work that will be a fitting legacy...
Bye Harry, it was good to know you... Please merge with earlier thread... I didn't read down as I had just been advised by a friend of his... |

I always liked his "Eden" books (West, Winter, & Return to). Man, too many great authors are passing on right now.

Don't forget The Stars and Stripes Alternate History Series. I loved it. A what if the British Empire decided to come in upon the side of the Confederate States, and screwed up.

What I find strange is a number of his books are available either free or $0.99. How can that be if he has just died.

Some of those stories might also be out of copyright in the UK, but determining that is even harder, because it depends on exactly when they came out of copyright in the US. I wish every nation would agree on something simple, like the greater of 50 years after publication and the lifetime of the author. But that's not going to happen. But we could get everyone to agree on lifetime+50 years, which is the Berne convention minimum. |

So sorry to hear of his death. He is one of my favourite sci-fi writers, especially the Deathworld, Eden and Stainless Steel Rat series.
