I did not know that you could generate enough power from a solar/battery setup to charge an EV. I thought they required tons of electricity (several kilowatts) to be charged. But if you can do this via solar, that would be a benefit for sure.

Oh yeah, you can get solar panels on the roof of a car port for charging. In the UK, some car parks use them for electric charging bays. What may be happening is the solar set-up takes longer to get to 80% charge than a mains set-up.

It is all about HOW long you are willing to wait. The rate is negotiated by the EVSE (charge device), by what it can provide vs what the vehicle can accept. ANY EVSE with greater capacity will not be fully used because the vehicle can't swallow all those trons any faster ) This is why folk get mad at those with older cars hogging a 350KW chargepoint, when their car could use the 100KW unit in the next bay. It CAN't take more than it was designed for. |

For what it may be worth, one local business put in a couple of solar powered EV chargers with NACS and CCS 1 connectors. With 10 400W solar panels (a 10' x 15' block) for each charger, on a bright sunny day, they will supply about 2kW average during sunlit hours. After about 4 weeks, they added a 230V AC connection to the charger to boost the charge speed to about 8 hours for a Tesla 57kWh battery (10 => 80%). After about 10 weeks, they modified the two charging stations so you needed a keycard since they had no physical lock mechanism on the charger or the parking lot and people were using them when the office was closed to charge personal EVs.
